So we bought the heated floor system at the Home Depot..the one where you roll it out..its like a matt and comes with a thermostat. While looking at it, this guy was standing beside me and said are you buying that. I told him I was thinking about it for under our floor tiles in the kitchen. He said his bill went up by $150 per month and he only has abit in his bathroom which is on for 1 hr each morning! He also showed me the box says it uses as much energy as a lightbulb or 2 and he says maybe this is false advertising because it made his bill go up so high. I asked a worker after at the store and they said there is no way that could have happened. What do you think? Do you know anyone that had or has this? I bought it anyways and am abit nervouse..I only bought the 8 foot one..just one box..Will It make my bill go skyhigh?

IF the guy that told you this was telling the truth there must be something else VERY wrong...likely the thermostat or wiring to the thermostat as it would be impossible for one of these units to use that much energy unless it were defective or hooked up incorrectly. We have installed nearly 100 of these type of mats with zero failures..and with miniscule increases in energy bills. I cannot speak directly to the "brand" you have purchased but the one's we use work great! There should be energy usage information on the packaging. It has been our experience that it is usually very close..so I would jump in with both feet and enjoy your toasty warm floors! best of luck!

I install lots of these, and have one in my own bathroom. Mine is on all the time in the cold weather and as far as I can tell it only added about $1.60 per month on my bill. None of my other customers have had any noticable increases in their bills as well. The fact that he is only using it for 1 hour means it uses more hydro trying to heat the floor than it would take to just keep the floor warm all the time. He may have also pinched or shorted out the grid during installation. Go with it ,

I have radiant floor heat in my kitchen under the marble. We keep ours on all winter. It never is shut off until spring. Our bills are reasonable, considering the size of our house. Mine is heated from the hot water tank, and we have gas heat.
Install it, and if your bills are high, well at least you have a selling point in your favor. No one says you have to have it on all the time- that is in your control.
