Some hard evidence would suffice. Show me the evidence to support the existence of the sphinx, and I will believe. Otherwise I will continue not to believe.

Do not ask me to have faith in the existence of the sphinx. Show me the evidence, if you want me to believe.

Geez, can people read? The question isn't "Why don't you" but "What would convince you".

One thing that would convince me is biological evidence. If this Sphynx is, at the very least, an organism with a human-like face and a lion-like body, then there should be other organisms very much like it. Also, from what we know about biology, seeing a primate face on a "cat" body doesn't match up with the tree of life. So we'd need to see some kind of fossils that would point to such a lineage.

If this was just a unique being that "created" through some other circumstances, or was some kind of deity, then if we leave the metaphysics open enough there's really no way to confirm such a thing objectively. I'd need some subjective experience or personal spiritual revelation of sorts that would make me believe.

Why not "just believe"? I suppose I could. Though I don't see how my world would be any different either way. I haven't been visited by a Sphynx, or live in a culture were Sphynx-belief is significantly popular. I'm doing find going throughout my day without thinking out Sphynx beings.

"Also, in my opinion, teachers are biased in what they teach." - Schools are there to teach facts, as proven by the Creationists and the initial FSM ordeal.

If classes had a debate every five minutes to consider a spiritual take of things, they'd never get anything done.

As for the Sphinx, well a few hieroglyphics of such a creature would help, also if fossilized remains of Dinosaurs from millions of years ago have been discovered, surely a creature from merely a few thousand years ago would leave a similar trail.

A lot of people are taught to have only one idea stuck in there heads by teachers who have no idea of the concept imagination. Also, in my opinion, teachers are biased in what they teach. Some are so biased that they cannot see anything that doesn't come out of a book for school age kids. Can you imagine being an archaeologist back in the day, when everyone thought that everything that could be discovered had already been discovered. That was the thinking until the mid 1800's.

I'm actually into egyptology and egypt mythology, I actually believe that the sphynx is not a depiction of an animal but I believe it is a symbol.

I suppose I would need to have an interest or reason. Like it will affect my life. If it is a creature or not holds no need for me to know since it does not play a role in the present or future for me. Why not simply believe? I have not researched it nor have I seen the need to do so.

Some fossilized bones of actual Sphynxes would be a nice start.

I would need a preponderance of evidence to believe this just as I require it for most of the assumptions I must make. I suppose that a collection of fossilized footprints, a few thousand gathered up bones or a verifiable corps would do well to support any written stories of the creatures deeds. These kinds of proofs would all do nicely to convince me... but I'm not a Christian, of course... I generally require appropriately reliable proof to support my decisions to believe.

The notion would need to be officially endorse by a professional athlete or an actress or a girl who is related to people who have a lot of money but doesn't do much of anything or it is quickly passed through congress at the stroke of midnight.

If the Goa'uld ever manage to stage a successful invasion of Earth, we'll probably see a Sphinx. I don't recall ever seeing one in the series, but then I didn't catch every episode of "Stargate SG-1" either.
