"Blue arcs" are a perfectly normal phenomenon, though seriously weird if you haven'y noticed them before and don't know where they are coming from.

The mechanism is still not fully understood, but it involves the nerve fibre bundle directly between the optic nerve and the macula, and seems to represent some sort of "spill" of electrical energy in these fibres causing a "false light" effect

In a dark room or on a dark road, when a person stares a little to the right of the light at just the right angle, horizontal blue arcs appear, making a curved cigar shape, coming from the red light source.

A red "standby" light on a TV etc. in a totally dark room can be used to elicit the effect, but the angle has to be just right, and the effect only happens briefly until the eye moves through the critical location again.

The LOSS of this ability to see blue arcs has been considered as a clinical test for glaucoma

I've seen it quite often, it seems to occur when another car is heading at you at hight (hopefully in his own lane) and you look at the headlights at just the right distance away and at a specific angle. It only seems to occur with certian of the kinds of headlights (the really bright white ones). I think it is some kind of wierd wavelength of light produced by those type of headlights.

Some of the newer eyeglass lenses can create this effect. This phenomenon could be related to toxicity of certain medications that you might be taking, such as digoxin. Also, glaucoma might distort your vision in such a way. I recommend mentioning this exactly as you have here to your health care practitioner.

i think you should contact your optometrist and have a glare test. he may recommend adding an anti reflective coating to your lenses if you wear glasses or may prescribe an Plano prescription with anti reflective for night driving
