He was basically the guy at the head of the parade. He was there to pave the way for Jesus. To tell everyone that Jesus the Messiah was coming.

As others have said, it was to go before and announce the coming of the Messiah.
I've seen the visitation between Mary and Elizabeth (John's mother) while both were pregnant written as 'when the Word met the Voice'.

"For this is he of whom it is written: ‘ Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.’" Matthew 11:10
this is what Jesus said about John the Baptist. I believe Scriptures speak better than human opinions.

He was the herald, the pro-claimer, the announcer of Christ......... He was letting the Jewish Nation know that the KING they have been waiting for was here.... He was, by baptism readying the people, washing them, cleansing them, getting them ready for the Kingdom that should have came into being with Christ...... but it did not happen did it ?? the Jewish Nation denied their King....... go in peace...... God bless

To testify for Jesus as the messiah. That is, until he went off course and got himself beheaded.

No he was sort of like Jesus's promoter. He told people he was coming and that he was the son of God.
