A controversial Parks Board appointee called police when a group of protesters showed up at her home. They were there to demand Frances Semler's resignation and they're not alone. Both the Hispanic activist group La Raza and the NAACP said they're considering pulling national conventions out of Kansas City if Semler stays on the Parks Board.

A neighbor said that Semler, 73, was worried about her safety when a group of people stood outside her door at 9 p.m. wanting to speak to her and that's why she called police.

Semler's a member of the Minutemen, an anti-illegal immigration group that some see as racist. When her opponents tried to pay her a personal visit, she called police.

"It was myself, two other women and three men. It was not meant to be intimidating," Rita Valenciano with the Hispanic Coalition said.

A police report filed by Semler said the group rang her "doorbell several times and after she didn't answer the door they started banging on the door."

A member of that group said it was trying to hand deliver a letter asking Semler to "immediately resign."

"We wanted to make sure she personally received the letter," Chere Chaney with Interfaith Justice said.

Semler's neighbor Helen Richmond said as an older woman she understands why Semler didn't answer the door.

"Because I don't know who is on the other side," Richmond said. "We have had several break-ins."

Semler wouldn't talk to us in person, but told us on the phone that she has no intention of resigning from the Parks Board or from the Minutemen. Mayor Mark Funkhouser is sticking with her.

"The volume at which they yell at me on something doesn't really change my mind on something. I don't see anything about the debate that is new or different," Mayor Funkhouser said.

But civic leaders said they will keep on making noise until their voices are heard.

Semler said she's not opposed to the Latino community. She's opposed to illegal immigration, but others said groups like the Minutemen encourage discrimination against all Latinos, even those who are citizens.

This is how they get their way. By intimidation and by marching to make DEMANDS! If you don't go along with what they want, this is how they act. Just wait until they get amnesty! We 'ain't seen nuthin yet!'
Who would open up their door at that time of night? Especially if there was a mob outside your door? Not me! Mob rule is coming to your neighborhood in the near future! People will be wearing bandannas over their face when they protest. They are turning America into Mexico!!

Illegals come to OUR country to force us to do what THEY want. I am so disgusted at our ineffectual government.

Despite what the Minuteman Project formally claims, there are unfortunately many racist bigots within that organization that not only want to repair our country's admittedly broken immigration system but that want to use Latinos as scapegoats for all their woes. Nevertheless, this woman was selected for this position based on her professional credentials and regardless of what her personal opinions and political involvements are, if she is fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of her appointment, then she should not be intimidated into resigning. Being opposed to illegal immigration is not racist, and thus far, that is the only allegation these civil rights groups can make.

I'm not from Kansas City, but from what I've read it seems to me like this whole issue has more to do with these civil rights groups testing the new mayor than with racism or immigration.

By the way- I don't like the Minuteman Project or what they stand for, but that doesn't prevent me from looking at this issue objectively.

Let's see now. Where to begin?

Regardless of the issue involved, if several people seek to confront one person, that single person MUST get the police of some type of witness involved. If not, it is the word of several people vs 1 person as to who said what, and maybe who pushed whom first.

An alternative to calling the police is to call the fire department. That brings witnesses and a total distraction and defeat of the agenda of the agressors, which is as much anti-police as it is anti-target-enemy.

This is found in every Organize and Confrontation for Dummies book, including those by Alinsky, Trapp, and yours truly.

How interesting that the National Association For the Advancement of (Progressive) Colored People are allied here.Who cares where both groups hold their conventions. More aptly they would be held in Caracas or Mexico City....or even Tehran.

Well both La Raza and the NAACP are racist radical groups.
Just like the KKK.
They will get what they want do to intimidation, and as long as politicians like Senator Lindsey Graham(SC...REP?)
give them a hearing.
La Raza is a psuedomilitant group of thugs bent on giving free access to the US by the criminals who are here illegally and the ones that want to come here illegally.

La Raza is nothing more than a Hispanic version of the KKK or the aryan nation. members of those groups should all be locked in a big room together for several months.

I don't open my door unless I know for sure who it was. I won't even take their word. It was nice when I had a dog that scares the heck of anyone. Can We call all the non whites racist if Jehova witnesses knock ontheir door trying to give them a watchtower magazine???

It's not appropriate for them to go there in a large number to a person's home.

They are nothing more than racist bullies abusing and twisting the law to their desires.

Could you imagine if there were a "La Raza" in Mexico for illegal Americans? They would be arrested, tortured and disappear soon from Mexico.

Oh, wait...there aren't any illegal aliens (Americans) living in Mexico, are there? I wonder why?

Funny that neither group ever demands the resignation of former KKK Grand Kleagle Robert Byrd.

Oh wait...he's a Democrat isn't he.

Never mind.

They knew very well that they were trying to intimidate an old woman by pounding on her door after dark. I hope the police start arresting them if this continues.

She should have come out shooting the ba$tards. How dare they try their third world tactics in our country. I hope the police arrested them. I would file a law suit against both groups. Freaking heathens.

I don't agree with ANYONE trying to strong arm someone for their beliefs. If someone came to my door and DEMANDED an explanation of my beliefs they would definitely have the Police called on them for intimidation.
