I use Corel Paintshop Pro XI. http://www.corel.com
I tried GIMP http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html because it was free but it's so confusing and hard to figure out.

Maybe what you should look for is 'Logo Design' tutorials, not Photoshop Tutorials about text effects. Text effects can be nice, but also over the top, a good graphic designer knows how to make even the simplest word or phrase look just right. If all you're looking for is to add a signature to your pictures, what you want to do is add your text using a simple font (like Arial or Helvetica), making it big enough just to be read, but not intrusive. If you choose to go with white color for the text you can add a drop shadow to make it stand out, or if you choose black you could go with an outter glow (yellow), or regardless of the color you choose, add a stroke (of up to 5 pixels) of a contrasting color.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 is the newest version however all of them from Photoshop 7 work great.

Picasa can not put text on an image.
Picasa can not edit parts of an image nor combine images, nor lots of other stuff.
Picasa is cool for what it does and is a good photo file manager.

Well, all the photoshops are good. I don't believe that their is a big difference between the different versions.
I'd recommend downloading gimp instead of buying photoshop.... It has all the same capabilities of photoshop but is free.

I love it. You download it for free and your pictures will be on this. It is private because you make your own account. You can edit pictures and add some effects like make the picture black and white. Make sure your pictures are saved on to the computer so they will come onto picassa. Just download, it is for free. If your pictures are saved onto the computer, then they will come onto this website privately. Play with the pictures all you want it is really fun!
