I'm 18 years old and I'm thinking of getting a mohawk. I've been growing my hair for 6 years and I want to cut it, but a regular haircut would be boring, so I thought of getting a mohawk. I don't plan on spiking it, I just want to keep it natural; and if I need to look formal, I have no problem with gelling it and brushing it back.

Would employers have a problem if I did my hair like this?

Oh, and I've never had a job before- I have filled out many applications, but have only had 2 interviews. I think it is because I do not have any previous work experience, so I plan on working on my college campus for the first quarter so that I have an occupational reference and then apply at a bank as a teller.

Thanks.

Thanks for all of the feedback.
For all of the applications that I filled out, I would go in and check on the status on my application a week after I filled it out and the week after that I would call and ask. For the interviews and when I checked in, I would wear a polo shirt, jeans, tennis shoes, and I would have my hair back. And one thing that I didn;t understand when I filled out my application is that it did not seem to matter that I had a high GPA or that I put some of the awards that I won during high school.

I think that I am going to apply for dining services at my school or try federal work study. I'm pretty sure that they have a lax dress code, but I will check and I may do the mohawk while I'm working on campus, but when I am ready to apply at the bank, I will cut it off.
I might as well have my fun now, right?

I have hired a punk hair do staffs back in dot come time, but what I get because their talent and extra ordinaire dicipline person for the high school students.

I have to convince myself to try them out, normally I would'n't have time for it.

The experience is not that bad, but they are not the fist choice becaus the apprearence.

My advice to you is get normal appearance if you prefer to do the job, otherwise you just going to make it harder for yourself.

I have been 18 once!

Good luck

If you want a simple Mohawk go with a strip from front to back. As for employers excepting it I do not know what to tell you. I work at a movie theater and did sport a Mohawk strip two yrs ago and my managers did not have any problems with it. You could also go with a round Mohawk that sits in the center. to see a photo check out my Yahoo group called coolhairstyle. The photo on the front is what I am referring to. If you get it done join my group and post a photo.

No bank in the world is going to hire you as a teller if you have a mohawk. In this politically correct day and age, you wouldn't even get a job as a mascot for the Mohawk Valley State Bank.

Employers look for people that they can count on, and that have an appearance that says "reliable", "friendly", and "trustworthy". Get the boring haircut if you want a job doing anything more than sweeping the streets, and think about a different haircut in a year or so, once your employer knows you're a good employee, and isn't upset or freaked out by a haircut that looks like it might have been in a Village People video.

And go look up the Village People to understand the reference. You're too young to realize who they were.

Hmmm... if you want to work at a BANK, then a mohawk could potentially prevent you from getting a job. Sadly, the world is just shallow like that... it's just like getting a bunch of visible tattoos on your arms and whatever. Companies typically don't hire those types even though it's merely personal expression because they think that tattoos = trouble-makers and/or slackers and that anything out of the norm will scare off customers. I think it's BS, but that's just how it is unfortunately. That's why you seldom ever see an office worker with a mohawk or tattoos or piercings...

No bank (or other financial institution) would hire you with either long hair, or a mohawk.

As to your "many applications" but only 2 interviews, let me ask you this.

What do you wear when you go in and fill out the apps? Jeans,& sneakers or sandals and t-shirts, or nice khaki's and a button up shirt with shined shoes.

You state your hair is long, how long? Do you pull it back before you fill out the app?

And finally, how many times have you gone back to check on the status of your applications? Times are getting tough, jobs are getting harder to find and competition is thick. You should go back at least once a week and talk to the managers to see if anything has opened up. Trust me, if you do that you will get a job, well, as long as you look professional and speak well with good manners.

Good luck to you.

As a woman who has been a manager for large retail stores for just shy of 20 years.. I will be honest with you and say yes, a mohawk, even not spiked will affect you getting a serious job.

Your expression of yourself.. the clothes you wear, your hair, etc.. all that, tells people the things about you that you may not verbally tell about yourself.

Employers look at piercings and hair styles and coloring.. they think about their customers and what they will think..

If you really want a job, you need to take all that into consideration unless you want to work for the circus, a carnival, or Spencers.

Yes, a Mohawk will severely limit your prospects. If you add the unusual haircut to the no experience thing, you could starve to death. You need to try to look as conservative as possible when looking for a job. And the no experience thing doesn't have to be a hurdle. See if you can't volunteer some time somewhere, like a hospital, therapy center or a rescue center for animals. Someone in your counseling office might be able to hook up a situation for you.

You will NEVER get a job as a bank teller with a mohawk. Without any job experience I would skip the mohawk until you do. You are going to be up against others with no skills (and bank tellers do have skills) and they end up looking at external factors that really don't matter. If it is you against a guy with a typical hairstyle and both of you are equally qualified - he is going to get the job - not you. (That is unless you are applying for a job in a bar or a trendy clothes store.)

Most employers in the retail business wants conservative.Wild haircuts and colors don't give the right impression. It may be boring but you don't get a paycheck unless you are hired.A office job would pretty much be the same.At a bank most employees are conservative.Leave the crazy look for Halloween or a party.

In all honesty, it would be tough. That's just the reality of it. Tattoos and piercings can generally be covered - a mohawk can't. Yes, many professionals have tattoos but you don't see them. Seems unfair I know.
I have a lot of tattoos but they can be covered. As much as I hate it, I can't always dress the way I want depending on if I'm seeing a client that day (I even own my own business but have to be careful).
When trying to get a job you will be judged on appearance first - people can't help it. And if they aren't opened minded you'll be cut before you even get a chance to speak.

maybe
I notice that people hire
potential employees by how much
experience. If they don't have much
they might be willing to do on the job training.
provided you "look" the part.
a mohawk, a cute carefree hair cut
might not"work" for the banker that wants
their customers to know they are a friendly place of business...but not carefree with their money.
so ya see...it might not work. but try several different banks and see how it all plays out!
usually occupational counselors are good people to ask
