I use vista premium
I found my spyware was slowing my pc down, though i had 4 progs installed and two anti virus.
now just have the 2 spyware and 2 anti virus.
system up to speed again.
ram is cheep (i use 1.5gb) vista loves ram
Also uninstall old not needed progs/ games
yes a de-frag hard drive couild help
run a registry cleaner tool.
try a prog like ,tuneup utilitise 2007' download a trial, this will check your system, give advice / fix / clean registry etc.
Its not easy to upgrade processor (i use 3.33gb single core processor, its fine. dual core / quad core processors are great but, not needed unless you like processing lots of diffrent jobs at once, but when you buy a new machine then opt for the dual / quad core.
If its just your internet thats slow, try deleting yoyr browsing history and check your JAVA is updated.
check your harddrive and processor are they working overtime? ctrl alt del and select 'start task manager' to find out.

Go to Control Panel
Choose Power Options
Then make sure you check the High Performance option.
(Battery life will be less if you have a laptop).
Too bad you have Vista Basic - it does not have all the features of most other versions so some of these suggestions may not work.

What u do is go buy a flash drive from any computer store or store that sells computers and plug it into a usb port. When it is plugged in, it will ask if u would like to use the space as ram. when u do that ur computer will run faster!

more ram or a duel core cpu
vista is fine, its peoples bad pc housekeeping that makes it run slow
run disk clean up and a defrag
dont use 3rd party tweaks
turn off graphical effects if you want speed

i have vista and it runs extremely fast. i also have alot of other software loaded onto the hard drive.
i would say upgrade your processor and get more ram.
it may even help to defrag once in a while.
good luck :)
