A complete fantasy. Of course, you can criticize the Bible and the Koran by saying it's impossible to prove the existence of God. But the Book of Mormon is a special case, because it not only has an unproveable God story but it also describes in detail a civilization in the Americas for which there is no physical evidence, in spite of the fact that artifacts from much older civilizations in the Holy Lands are still being found. There aren't even any myths among the native Americans about this civilization. The Book of Mormon was "translated" from tablets written in a language called "Reformed Egyptian", which never existed.
I am not Mormon bashing here, they have the right to believe what they want. But the plain fact is that not even Mormon archeologists have been able to find any evidence to support the Book of Mormon. But don't take my word for it. This is easy enough to research.

I used to wonder if it was true or not. Assuming it wasn't true would have meant Joseph Smith was perhaps the greatest religious genius and con artist of all time, but I still accepted it as a possibility. However, my views have changed and now I know it is true. The Spirit of God has given me a witness that it is in fact the word of God.
Note: Even when I didn't believe it was true, I found that most arguments against the Book of Mormon were easily refuted. For example, you have an answerer here who claims, like many, that the golden plates must have weighed at least 200 pounds or so, making it impossible for Joseph Smith to have carried them... their calculations are based on two critical errors: 1) that the plates were made of pure gold; Joseph said the plates had the appearance of gold but never made the assertion that they were made of pure gold, and 2) their calculations are based on the assumption that the golden plates were actually a solid block of gold, rather than a stack of thin metal plates; anyone who has studied a little physics or chemistry would know that a stack of thin metal plates will weigh significantly less than a solid block of metal having the same dimensions.

I shouldn't answer this question, because I have never read the Book of Mormon. However, I am aware that there is such a book, and it has brought comfort and spiritual tranquillity and strength to hundreds of thousands of people over the generations.
I don't know of any atheists or faith-knockers who can make the same claim.
All you negative answerers, why can't you just leave people be--to believe what they want?

In terms of equality with other religions it is indistinguishable. It is a book written by man containing the claims of man. Man claims that it is god-inspired. Any book that derives its tenets about "god" from the claims of man is an extremely weak instrument of faith.

It was translated from a set of gold plates measurint 7X6X8 inches.
The angel Moroni stated that they were in fact. made of Gold.
a square foot of gold weighs 1206 pounds. (12X12X12)
Mathematically speaking, the gold plates would have then weighed a little over 1/4 of that.
Which means Joseph Smith, and every other human who claimed to have lifted the plates (that would include JS mother and wife) would have been lifing the equivilent of the largest NFL offensive lineman.
KNowing this, of course, the LDS apologists argue that the plates were not in fact made of actual gold...but another similar alloy....even though church officials still want "Gold" to be taught in sunday school.
So Moroni misspoke evidently.
