Although I use just what I have at hand (the wine I drink) there is a chart here that specifies the best type of wine for the type of food you are cooking

it depends what you're cooking. The basic rule of thumb is red wines with red meats and white wines with fish, veal or chicken. A hearty spaghetti sauce calls for a robust red wine like a burgundy, zin or cabernet. You could use a lighter red like merlot combined with butter and steak drippings as a sauce for a filet mignon. Sauterne or Chardonnay is fine with zesty chicken dishes...there are cookbooks that can be more explicit.

I agree with ^ above. Don't cook with what you won't drink. Two reasons. One if you don't use it all in the recipe then it won't sit around your house forever...There money out the window. Two, if you won't drink it more then likely you won't eat it either! Have had the same experience with the cooking wine! Gross!

any wine is good for cooking. just make sure it's something you would definately drink.

i love pinot grigio in stuff, next to stuff on stuff with stuff :) love it.

cooking wine concentrates the flavour of it. so you want something with at least a good taste.

my dad once bought cooking wine...wow. clean your toilet with that cos it was just horrible, even cooked in the food. ruined the flavours.

Most of the chefs on the Food Network recommend cooking with whatever wine you plan on drinking. "If you won't drink it then cook with it!"

i go by the rule: if i won't drink it, i don't cook with it

but 2buck chuck is good for drinking (it's won awards)...and it's cheap so i don't feel so bad cooking with it.

have you tried cooking with white wines?
