I know that your families will disown you if you leave the Latter Day Saint cult. I want to discuss success stories of those individuals that safely made it out of the Mormon church.
Gordon Bitner Hinckley has a tight grasp on his people but to those that bravely made it out of Mormonism I applaud you!
God will especially bless you for your great effort to know Him better! The Bible is your only key to truth.

I am not afraid of any abuse from Latter Day Saints. I am protected by the law so no attacks will hurt me!

If you were a member you would know that it's not a cult.
Focus your time and energy on living your own religion instead of attacking other religions.

My family and I left the church at the beginning of the year. I was the only member on my side of the family, so I didn't have to be concerned about them being upset with me. Some people are disowned by their parents, siblings, etc, when they leave the church, others don't have this problem.
I wish most LDS families would be the latter.
It's hard for active LDS to believe someone just left the church because they learned it's not true. It's easier for them to think that that person left because they were offended or because of sin. Why in the world would a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc, generation Mormon, risk alienating their families just for a silly cup of coffee, or a drink of booze? I don't believe they would.

It wasn't difficult at all for me to leave.
I wrote a letter to the membership records office in SLC, I can't remember how I got the addy, but I'm sure you can google it.
I simply stated I wanted out and that I understood the consequences of my actions. They sent me a letter back about a week later stating that my letter was forwarded to the bishop. He called me just to make sure it was in fact what I wanted he didn't try to change my mind or anything. A week after that the bishop sent me a letter saying that he has successfully removed my name per my request. He apologized for the delay, wished me luck and let me know that I had 30 days to cancel the effect of resignation if so desired.
Oh, and the church itself sent me a simple little pamphlet which almost read as a severance letter: "Sorry it didn't work, best wishes, God bless, etc". And that was it.
No harrassment, no fire, no attempted murder, nothing "cult like". Though I've since come back to the church, while I was out of it (and vehemently anti-Mormon) the Bishop (or Russ as I called him) still visited me from time to time as a friend.
It's really not as bad as some people make it.
---
PS: Lest someone has resigned from the LDS church themselves, how can you know what it's like?
Seriously people, all these 3rd person accounts are getting as rediculous as the 3rd person account folk lore that goes on in the church. If you haven't experienced it yourself, then shut up.

I had to escape in the night, over the 20 foot fence and through the woods to grandmother's house. I didn't tell her because she would have killed me for leaving the faith. But I got a couple bucks from her so I could stay at a Holiday Inn. Now I'm safe outside the LDS grip.

sorry but I am still LDS. My brother doesn't go anymore by his choice although he is always welcomed back. Our entire family still treats him the same and will always love and support him in his personal choices. He has not gone to church in over 10 years but now with little kids he is thinkig about going back. Our church is not a cult. We support our families even when they make mistakes. Also, the Bible is not the ONLY key to truth- try prayer for instance- it works miracles!

There's quite a few of them on here and they tend to fall into two groups. Those who've left it and aren't bothered by it (anymore) and those that still hold grudges or ill feelings. If you follow the Mormon Q&A's you'll see them more often. NorrisPenguin (He's always changing his name, he's still "active" in church but no longer believes), Diane, lindsey p, betteriage, imasis2 are a few that come to mind. I enjoy most of their insights and views.

uh, no my family did not disown me because I left the church. That is a huge false assumption on your part. Not every Mormon family or even a large percentage of Mormon families are like that.
I was raised in a strict mormon family. I stopped going to church when I was about 17 because I didn't agree with a lot of the teachings. Now I'm atheist.
Not exactly the dramatic story you were hoping for?
Sorry about that
Oh wait I see, you're Christian. So you believe in original sin, virgin birth, talking donkeys and snakes, worldwide floods, people rising from the dead......and you're criticizing other religions and calling them a cult?? That is what I would call a hypocrite

Oh, for crying out loud! You make it sound like the Mafia or something.
If people wnat to leave, let them leave. No one is forcing them to do anything they don't want to do.
As for family, it's not usually the family that disowns the person who left the church, it's the other way around. Or, they are not disowned because they left the church, but because they can't leave it alone.

Made it out safely? Oh, come on. They are not terrorists. I was never in any personal danger for leaving the church. As far as cultishness, it's no more strange than any other religious belief out there.
