I am usually good with this sort of thing. I would usually use some version of what I would want to hear myself if I were in the other's shoe's, in this case I am at a loss, I was taken completely by surprise.

I probably should have been more specific. Something that is diplomatic and not automated and disingenuous sounding.

automated responses just seem disrespectful

"Thank you" is the appropriate answer, unless you also missed them. You don't always have to have some clever answer (which usually DOES sound automated) to be sincere.

It depends. If this is online in a private chat I simply smile. I don't miss people enough to say it back, lol. And I am creeped out when people tell me they miss me when I've been gone for 2 minutes or two days.

An in person convo: "Awww, that's so sweet" I guess, lol

Hello
If you miss that person also - then say "I miss you too!" - if not - how about - "How nice" or "Thats sweet" - depending on the relationship you have with them - relative/friend/work-mate

All you need to say is Thank you! That is sweet of you. (substitute sweet with any nice word).

"I miss you" is like "I love you".

There is ever only one appropriate response, whether you mean it or not.

"I miss you too" or "I love you too".

Anything else is just plain rude.

I would say "How kind of you to say that." and leave it at that.
