Triple imperfection.

In Hebrew numerology, the number 7 represented perfection. By default, the number 6 --one less than perfection -- symbolized imperfection.

So 666 is once, twice, three times imperfection. In other words, a monster or a tyrant.

The meaning of 666 - the number often referred to as the Mark of the Beast - is a highly contested concept. The number 666 is found in Revelation 13:16-18: "He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666."

John MacArthur explains the meaning of 666 this way: "The number represents the essential number of a man. The number 6 falls one short of God's perfect number, 7, and thus points to human imperfection. Antichrist, the most powerful human the world will ever know, will still be a man - a 6. The ultimate in human and demonic power is a 6, not perfect, as God is."1

MacArthur goes on to explain that the three digits emphasizes man's identity. When Antichrist is revealed, he will be identified with this number. The Bible is not clear what the mark will be: an implant, a microchip, a tattoo. It is wise not to speculate since the Bible does not give detailed information regarding this mark.

Assign whole single numbers to the letters of the alphabet starting with A=1 and so on restarting with J=1 and S=1 .

You'll find one of the things 666 means is FOX.

666 25 means FOX TV.

also, remember HAL, the psychotic computer in 2001 A Space Odyssey ? Count one letter up the alphabet for each letter and realise the code meant a next generation IBM computer.

Hi, Rachel:

It is the number of a man, and the value of his name totals that number. In Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, they assign numbers to the alphabet so you name can equal a number.

About four centuries after Constantine the Great, a forged document appeared bearing His signature. In Latin, it called the Pope VICARIUS FILII DEI, which totals 666. The Roman church believes Peter gave his "throne" to successors.

Nothing could be further from the truth. History reveals Jerusalem, not Rome, was the church headquarters--See Acts 15--and James, not Peter, seems to be calling the shots.

Jerusalem had a continuous line of Jewish bishops for almost 100 years until the aged Mark became the first non-Jewish bishop when Hadrian banned all Jews from Jerusalem.

A Bible code identifies Antichrist, and Rome has killed an estimated 60 million people in the name of God. Be certain to read all five chapters of "The Wise Shall Understand" at www.revelado.org/revealed.htm

You will understand why God identified this blasphemous power.

Shalom, peace in Jesus, Ben Yeshua

"I Like Pizza' is correct. Among the best biblical scholars, 666 is a code for "Neron Ceasar" based upon the assignation of letters for numbers popular in ancient Hebrew. John indeed saw Domitian, the Roman Emperor at the time of Revelation's writing, as Nero reborn since a deadly persecution of the Christians at Rome was underway at the time.

Revelation is a pastoral letter, of "John", likely a bishop/overseer imprisoned on Patmos, to the Christians of Rome written to give them hope in a time of trial and the final triumph of Christ over the evil Domitian.

It's not the number of the beast, because that is 616, when the bible was interpreted it was interpreted as 666 was the number of the beast, but there are historians think this was wrong. And that the correct interpretation should actually be 616.

So 666 is just a number.

Obviously, from the nonconsensus of answers and their incongruity nobody who cares knows.
And those who don't care, don't care to make sense of it.

I do NOT have the answer, but I DO BELIEVE that when the time comes, the answer will become obvious. The Ten Plagues of Egypt weren't exactly done behind closed doors, neither was the parting of the Red Sea nor the Feeding of the Five Thousand or The Crucifixion.
God is a big God, and he doesn't keep unnecessary secrets from His people. We will know when it matters. At the moment, it doesn't matter, except we're watching and waiting.
In His Service,
John the Baptist

In terms of gematria (the calculation in number of hebraic lettering that goes with the c/k/qabalah) 666 could mean:

~ Tiphareth as the centre of the Tree of Life.

~ 18 x 37 as IChIDH, the highest principal of Soul.

~ SVRTh as the spirit of Sol.

~ ShM YHShVH as Jesus.

~ The number of the Double Beast (back to back) comprising the male (Shugal) and the female (Choronzon) halves.

~ The Satanic Trinity of OMMV SThN (Typhon, Apophis, Besz).

You could add more, she muses.

Nero.
No, really, it does. 666 is Nero in number code (or something). Nero was a Roman emperor who killed many Christians. And that is why 666 was chosen as "The mark of the beast".

"The number is 666 in modern texts, although 616 and 665 appear instead in at least one ancient source. This topic is a source of contention for many church groups and theologians.[1] Some scholars contend that the number is a code for the Roman Emperor Nero,[2] a view that is supported by the Roman Catholic Church.[3][4]"
