If population expands infinitely, obviously we will get to a point where there is room for nothing but people, eventually. Is His Holiness depending on God's intervention? If you are a Catholic, do you feel it is sinful to oppose bulldozing forests to build houses?

Just for the record, I was raised Catholic and underwent 8 years of catechism. I know a LOT of Catholics and I haven't met ONE who resembles St. Francis.
As far as not having children = selfishness, it's just the opposite. Having numerous children who in turn eat up more of the world's resources is the height of selfishness.
As far as advocating 'not too many and not too few,' without birth control, I guess this means stop having sex after your 2nd child?
I live in Central America. I wish the Pope and Cardinals would come talk to all the prostitutes here who sell their bodies to support the 4+ children they have because they weren't ever told about birth control until it was too late. He'd probably just say it was 'God's Will' though.

To Mary's Oblate,
I can't say what the Pope believes in his 'soul' but he advocates population growth and considers birth control a sin. He may not care to think about the consequences of what he advocates, but the enevitable result is population growth until at least the end of human life as we know it now (perhaps no babies after the 2nd coming?)
If marriage is a vocation, then I presume only Catholics should get married and have children? Huh? I agree that there are too many unwanted children and abused children. You see the solution is that only Catholics with a vocation become parents, I see birth control as a bit more realistic.
You say misappropriation and selfishness with resources is the problem. No amount of sharing can compensate for the needs and impact 20 billion people. At some point not far away, there will not be enough clean fresh water for everybody, even if we give up bathing.
The Pope seems more worried about people enjoying sex than saving the environment.

The Pope is in the business of growing as many souls as possible to glorify his imaginary Boss. The Pope has little concern for the quality of the lives of individual human beings, nor does he give much thought to Earth's environment and the survival of non-sentient species. What else would you expect of a man who still believes human perception is the basis of reality and that thinking involves telepathic communication with God? I certainly cannot agree with his Holiness's philosophical views, and I've little doubt the Pope believes he's doing his best to advance God's agenda, regardless of the ultimate cost to humanity. A review of Papal history illustrates that Pontiffs have never acted in the best interests of mere human beings. Time and again history reveals a shocking Papal disregard for human suffering. Evidently, what's best for humanity and the environment ranks far below blind obedience to Church doctrine on every Pope's list of priorities. Always has -- always will.

I don't think the Pope believes the world population should expand infinitely. I bit of exaggeration, won't you admit?
The reality is that few people are called to the vocation of marriage and parenthood. Too many people get married for the wrong reasons, which is why there are so many divorces, abandoned children, domestic abuse and violence.
The Catholic Church rightly sees marriage as a sacred vocation. If one is not married, he or she should not be having sex. No sex, no children. It really is that simple.
We are called to serve God and build up His Kingdom. If we would only serve God, rather than ourselves, many of our problems would vanish. Overpopulation is not the problem, misappropriation and selfishness with resources is the problem.
The Catholic Church teaches is that we are to respect God's Creation, and all living creatures in it.
Peace be with you.

Well, you have touched on my pet peeve with the Catholic church. Other then this issue I have little else bad to say about the church.
It is amazing to me to see this Pope or any Pope before him, go to countries in Africa, Central America, etc and preach "no birth control", "be fruitful", etc. It is really sad that the church can not inject some common sense into their thinking and re-think that.
We, the people of the world, can begin to control the population now, freely, or we can wait until there is no choice.
When there is no longer a choice, the suffering will be on a scale this world has never known. And then new laws will be be put in place, because they will have to be, that will force population control. And believe this, no one is going to like it one bit.

You are making a incorrect assumption.
The population of native Europeans is shrinking due to the fact that many married couples are choosing not to have children through selfishness.
The Church has always taught that parents should be responsible about the number of children that they bring into the world. This means not too many and not too few.
Catholics are some of the original environmentalists. Ever heard of Saint Francis of Assisi?
The Catholic Church teaches:
In the beginning God entrusted the earth and its resources to the common stewardship of mankind to take care of them, master them by labor, and enjoy their fruits. (Genesis 1:26-29)
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 2402: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art7.htm#2402
With love in Christ.

Western Europe has suffered from a sharp decrease in family size which has impacted society's ability to care for the aged.. Lower tax base to support the aged and fewer family members to take care of their aged. This has been a trend in Western Europe for awhile. It is an economic issue.. And Catholics are prolife..
A Catholic..

That's a timely question. A few days ago I saw a news piece where the pope was speaking against "environmentally unsustainable development" and pollution. It seems to contradict the ban on contraception.

You are wrong. The Catholic church does not believe it will happen infinitely. In case you didn't know, the church believes we are in the last days before Christs return. They are adding to Gods people before the end.
