I was recently stopped at a sobriety checkpoint and a police officer required me to submit to field sobriety tests. I had not been drinking, but I did have have half of my Italian dinner in the back seat that I took with me from the restaurant. The policeman stated he "smelled alcohol". Could the Italian dinner that was prepared by an Italian chef create enough of an odor to fool a police officer when the windows were rolled up in the car? Thanks.

Yes, wine contains alcohol, it evaporates during cooking.
But the flavour (odour) will remain in the food.

In a word, no.

Either the policeman can't smell, or he was just using the "I smell alcohol" line as his excuse to put you through a field sobriety test.

I'd have offered the cop a portion of the dinner. Then hit him up for being drunk on the job.

HA! That'll teach 'em!

no, all the alcohol is evaporated away and all left in whatever sauce you ate would be residual sugars, not to mention they would be overwhelmed with the scent of garlic and herbs from your meal.

i wouldn't think so, cooking with wine or alcohol usually involves a cooking down process so I would say no
