There are lots of constructive ways to approach depression. Drugs, alcohol, and casual sex are NOT ways to do this.
When I'm feeling down I take a nap if at all possible. Sleep usually makes all kinds of things better. You can wake up refreshed with a new outlook on things.
You can also go for a drive. Driving clears my head. I crank up some music, roll down the windows and go wherever the road takes me.
You can go for a walk, or watch a funny movie. Pick up the phone and call a friend. Put on some happy music, play with your kids (if you have any) or hang out with your husband or wife (if you have one).
Most importantly, focus on the positive. Dwelling on problems or negative situations will just intensify your depression.

Look into the sunlight for a second. Turn around twice and then sit by a different person. Your mind had found an expectation that was false is all. The unbalanced chemicals will pass out of the spinal fluid in a while.

If possible, take a short nap. The world has a way of seeming a little brighter when just waking up. Otherwise, I remind myself of a time when I didn't value life as much as I do now, and try to be grateful for every moment.

Get outside as fast as you can. Look into the sunlight and do some breathing exercises. This will get you started on changing your mood. If your mood persists for several days or weeks or you're feeling like you want to harm yourself or someone else, consult your doctor.

I read the bible, go to church. Also, a shower or bath helps.
Walk in the woods or by the ocean. Watch a comedy.
I always thought talking to a friend would help, but if you're like me you have no friends to talk to.

I get active. I go for a walk, go window shopping, stroll thru a park. Just getting out of the house will often nip a blue day in the bud.

I usually find a project to do. keeping busy helps me get my mind off of whatever the problem is for a while until I'm refreshed and ready to prepare to deal with it.
