I can't plug the sync cord directly into my camera, or it will fry the internal components of the Canon, which is not what I want. I can't find any information about it online, so I'm asking here. The strobe says it is a "Venca strobe" "VS 250 (117v)". It was distributed by "Venca Sales International Inc" with a NJ address and phone number that no longer exist.

Why in the world would you even bother? Trash the thing before you trash your camera and get a Vivitar 285HV if you can't afford a Canon TTL flash. Its trigger voltage is low enough not to cause damage.
