After watching interviews and post race coverage it is sounding like they tuned the engine for maximum power to go for the win. They were in a position to gamble and took a calculated risk, especially considering that Richmond is a shorter race. The engine shop went a little far and it cost them the win but didn't really hurt them with the new chase seedings this year.

He did no longer win the championship by way of fact he did no longer score as many factors in the process the ten-race Chase as Jimmie Johnson did.BTW,Jimmie and Carl the two gained 3 races in the process the Chase and finished 1st and 2d,so how do they no longer reward winners something after the Chase starts off? final analysis is that Carl made a mistake at Talladega and brought about a tremendous crash that he replaced into additionally in touch in and had an ignition problem at Lowe's Motor Speedway.Jimmie Johnson did no longer have any hardship in the process the Chase and his finishes have been:2d,5th,1st,ninth,6th,1st,2d,fifteenth,1s...

The spring on one of his valve heads broke and caused the valve head to fall into the combustion chamber. once that happens the engine will self destruct.
I'm trying to figure out why it happened. Did someone drop the ball and not adjust the valves correctly or not replace worn springs when they should have?
Keep me posted.
