My girl friends parents have medium sized dog in their back yard and you can see its ribs through its back and it is loosing its fur. They say that it eats allot and I do believe that they feed it every day. Also, they said they brought it to the vet twice who has de-wormed it twice and says that the dog is just not absorbing its food so he suggested that the dog eat yogurt with live cultures-I find it hard to believe that this is all the vet had to say but that’s all I have to go by. If anyone has an idea of what can be done for this dog please help me with this because it breaks my heart and I am willing to do anything to make this dog better.

They need to take it to another vet or to a veterinary school clinic. The problems can range from cancer to parasites. This is not normal. On the other hand, I have little respect for people who leave a dog outside 24/7 regardless of the weather.

Ask your friend if the dog has had fecal floats and fecal cytologies to find out what organisms or parasites are in the stool. Ask if they have had any lab work done, blood counts, blood chemistries, etc. Also, have they had any x-rays taken to look for masses. If the dog IS getting fed properly, then a full work-up is in order. It's possible the owners have declined these things from the vet, due to financial constraints. If the vet has not offered these things, then they need to see another vet and get these things done. I'm a vet tech.

I agree with getting the authorities involved. Even if your girlfriend's parents aren't doing anything criminally wrong to the animal it sounds like someone needs to step in and do something before the animal dies. It sounds like it is seriously ill and needs all the help it can get. Maybe try offering it some of that nutrical ( I believe that is what it's called..it is supposed to add calories and put on weight)
Good Luck, this dog depends on you before it wastes away and dies.

Call your local SPCA or Humane Society ASAP. They will send someone to investigate. You can remain anonymous.
