I'm going to buy a new car and with my job, I dont use my car for ANYTHING other than roadtrips to go see friends...

I want something that has great efficiency, but not horribly cramped, so that it will hold 4 people for a weekend roadtrip... sardines in a can... ya know?

get a VW diesel they will get about 50 mpg on the highway and in many places diesel is cheaper than gas. look for the new jetta (there larger than the older ones) or if you want more room than that look for an 04 OR 05 passat diesel. mileage on these isn't much of an issue b/c the engines are heavier duty than gas engines you can easily get 300-400K miles on a diesel. the biggest issue with these cars is some of the surfaces seam to wear easily (interior door handles discolor slightly and some of the knobs)

Mid-nineties and newer Buick Lesabre or Park Ave's get around 30 mpg on highway and lots of room. Cheap to find older ones also. VW diesel Passat's are great too.
Fueleconomy.gov has EPA economy ratings for various cars you can check and compare. Real mileage is usually 3-5 mpg lower than ratings except the new ratings, supposedly.

Toyota Prius... the hybrid car. Look into it... it gives in the 40s for mpg. Toyotas in general are very reliable along with the Hondas, and the Prius has only come out in the past couple of years but has given excellent performance.
