I hear lots about Global Warming but what about Global Dimming? What is it?

What is global dimming and how does it effect people in New Zealand. I have read a little about it but I would like some more indepth information. I know it has something to do with Jets and big planes contrails but does it happen on a Global scale and is there anything a person like me can do to get the problem noticed by the world at large.

Global dimming refers to a standby excuse to explain why the world is not currently on a warming trend. If the cooling can be blamed on anthropogenic causes, the global warming gravy train can continue under the alias climate change.

And as far as the 10 grade text book goes, aircraft leave behind ice crystals, and effect the climate the same way clouds do. They make the days cooler, and the nights warmer. In other words they tend to cancel each other, as long as there are commercial flights at night. Upper atmospheric water vapor clouds, regardless of their origin is not global dimming.

It's an increase in artificial atmospheric albedo (the reflection of sunlight) It's a strange side effect of pollution that slightly counteracts global warming by reflecting or dispersing some of the sunlight before it can reach the earth's surface and radiate as heat.

After the 9/11 WTC attack in New York all jet liners were grounded for 3 days, giving scientists a chance to study artificial atmospheric albedo caused by vapor trails by measuring how much is caused by zero planes and by the slowly increasing number of jets after the no-fly restriction.

Jets are not the only contributor to global dimming though. Many types of particles are involved.

Global dimming has to do with the increased amount of particulate matter in the air due to commercial air ways, fossil fuel burning and other large contributers to bad air quality.
Global dimming is really the amount of sunlight that is being forced back into space because it reflects off of the particles in the air. It bounces off the particles and scatters, making it so that less light gets to earth.
The average amount of sunlight not getting through is about 10%, but rises every few years by a very small amount.
After 9/11 when the air ways were cleared for two days, the temperatures all over the world rose one degree (which is really phenominal and amazing). This was due to the fact that so much particualte matter was not being added into our atmosphere, hence, more sunlight and radiative heat got through. This is how is can effect the world.

It is due to pollutants you can see - like the pollution that causes smog. The decrease in radiation hitting the ground is about four times higher in urban areas. Since the greenhouse effect is related to the amount of solar energy reaching the ground, it is masking the full effect of the greenhouse effect.

The types of molecules and particulates that cause solar dimming don't tend to stay in the atmosphere as long as some greenhouse gases (like CO2 and CH4). So with technology advances like the catalytic converter and scrubbers these pollutants are decreasing. These types of pollutants tend to clear the atmosphere quickly, and in doing so increase the greenhouse effect quickly.

Information on contrails hasn't exactly captured the general public interest yet, but the subject is increasingly studied. More and better information and a discussion on solutions should be coming in the near future.

Global dimming isn't what you describe at all. Global dimming refers to the dimming of the intelligence of humans who are forced day after day to believe that "global warming" exists. False science by those opposed to First World Countries is now considered normal and true.

Having USA hating ivory towered eggheads who hate the very country that provides them with their wealth and lifestyle leading the "science" makes as much sense as having CBS news as a "balanced" news organization making political commentary.

I'd trust EXXON before I'd trust any professor who drives a gasoline powered vehicle and has NO viable work experience in real life. At least EXXON provides this professor with gasoline to power his SUV, and heating oil to heat his house. What does the professor provide anyone?
