Oh, there are many more than that. All the stats show is that more people feel free enough to be up front about it.

Whether it's a real increase or simply an increase in the number of people who admit to being atheists, it's something to celebrate! Reason may finally be waking up to the necessity to defend itself against the onslaught of religion against everything humanity has worked so hard for in the last 500 years, and that includes not only science but also democracy and freedom.

I don't think that it is really an increase. I think that more atheists are gaining the courage to reveal themselves, as a result of the increasing public dialog on the subject, and the recent rash of books... Dawkins... Harris... Hitchens... etc... all best-sellers.

Hopefully, though, all this attention will provoke more 'moderate' chrisitans to examine their beliefs with an open mind and intellectual honesty. THEN we will see an actual increase... IF it can be accomplished before the christian 'dominionists' succeed with THEIR agenda.

This information is new to me and potentially very good news. Unfortunately, you didn't cite your source, so I won't be able to celebrate, yet. I certainly do hope its a harbinger of the future. Thanks for sharing.

Edit: "Mr. Zwink" I, and many others, worry people who believe in God will ultimately destroy civilization. That is why any increase in the number of atheists is welcome news. If you think I'm just being paranoid, google "Dominionists."

Probably an increase in education and people being less afraid to admit to it. I hope it is. Imagine a world without religion - the mideast would be peaceful, women would have complete reproductive freedom, the twin towers would stillbe up, less discrimination against gays, science and medicine further advanced... Sounds a lot better to me.

Is that true? It sounds a little high, but I hope it is an indication of future trends. I haven't looked at any of the statistics on this, but I would have expected the number of atheists to be dropping in the US. Thanks for cheering me up.

Just can't stand the fact that Christian Conservative America just might have a few Liberals and Atheists hanging around huh?

I don't think it's actually increased.....what I think has increased is the number of Atheist who feel OK coming forward now.

It used to be a really big deal to say your were an Atheist....and in some circles it still is.

Source?

Sounds like a change that might very well be within the statistical error of the survey.

Hmmm, let's see the actual data. It could be that people who used to call themselves agnostics now feel comfortable saying they're atheists. Or, it could be that you're looking at two different surveys which asked the question differently. Could be a lot of things...

Don't jump to conclusions.
