A guy stole my passport and his parent found it in the backseat of his car. Now, I will have to pay 150 dollars to get it replaced because I already cancelled it. I am going to going to Germany in two weeks, so I contacted his parents and said that I would need the passport to be paid for or I would seek legal action. Am I being to rash, or should they pay for it? Right now, he is in Rehab, so they are the ones that would fit the bill. What should I do????

Well they do kinda owe you cuz 150 dollars is a lot of money

If it were somewhere around 10 or 20 then you could let it slide but over 100, definitely not.

I don't think your being harsh, you should get your money back for the trouble you've gone through because of their son.

And I dont think its wrong that you told them that you will take legal action if they don't pay, your just showing them that your being serious and they shouldnt take you so lightly.

and make sure their son apologizes too. no way he can steal something from you get caught and say nothing after that.

did his parents get in touch with you once they found your passport in the back seat of their son car and made any attempt to return the passport to you once they found it? It would be wrong to make his parents to paid for your new passport. If you explain to his parents in a civil manner about the expense it cost you and that you had to cancel the passport that their son stolen from you. I think they might be willing to offer to paid of it. If not, just fill against the son and not the parents for $150 dollars. Think about it for a moment, if this was turn around and you the parent and your son stolen his girlfriend passport. would you feel you should paid for something that your son did while he was on drugs? And if you was ask in a civil manner would you be thoughtful enough to offer to paid your son's girlfriend for the cost of a new passport? think, ok....good luck

How old is this guy? He is responsible for his own actions. His parents shouldn't pay for his wrong doings. You should talk to them first and if they want to bail him out and pay for it, then let them, if not, let them know that you are filing a report with the police, then do it. Just cause he's in rehab doesn't mean he's not responsible for the things he did. He's old enough to know right from wrong and if he has to pay for his wrong doing, then so be it.

I say you should make them pay. That would probably cause his parents to punish the guy, and he would probably have to pay his parents back when he gets out of rehab.

i think you shouldn't. having an offspring that gets in trouble that much that he needs to be rehabilitated is enough punishment to them. especially if they dont deserve it. it's the son who did the deed. why make the parents pay? have a heart :)

Nope...go for it babe. Your rights were violated and he could have sold that passport. $25,00 fee a Small Claims Court and when he's told to pay for your new passport...he has to refund you the 25.00 too.

is the guy a minor? if not, then no, his folks don't have to pay for it. if he is a minor, i believe they can be held responsible. ask your local p.d.
