You really don't know? Kind people believe that giving from the goodness of their hearts is a finer thing to want to do, than to receive gifts. In otherwords, it is more heart warming to be the giver than the 'getter'. It has to do with the quality of our lives and our capacity for generousity rather than personal selfishness. That is why people say that.
Obviously, at the holidays and on a special celebration, like graduation or your birthday, you will be the recipient of gifts. When you do receive gifts, you immediately thank the person who gave the gift to you, graciously and from the heart. If they send you a gift, send out a personal note or card of thanks immediately to let them know how much you appreciate their thoughtfulness.
And most importantly...when you are the giver....do so from the heart and do not look back. Hope this helps.

Because Jesus taught us this bit of wisdom. You'll find lots of great nuggets like that if you read your Bible.
If you were asking because you don't understand it, then think about it-- if *everyone* decides to be giving and put others' needs and desires first, we'd have a society full of people all caring for one another. Hatred and neglect stem from our tendency to put ourselves above everyone else.

I think it's because when you give you make someone happy which in turn makes you feel good, but I'm sure it goes both ways, lol.
