Because people are different from each other.
Some people don't care about religion and only want peace.
Some people only care about their religion and only want to kill people that don't care about religion.
Some people like Capitalism and working for things such as their own land and a house.
Some people like Socialism and want the government to own and handle everything.
ETC...
The only way people are going to tolerate and love each other is if everyone is exactly the same and not one person has a dissenting view.
A lot like how Bin Laden said that America could have peace if everyone converted to Islam. He's silly.

Dear James
I read all the previous replies before trying to answer your question. They range from the fatalistic to the totally insane. Naturally, I disagree with all of them.
Just because I disagree, should I grab a weapon and kill them all ? Of course not. So, war is not the answer to settling our difference of opinions. That, I hope, deals with some of the above replies.
Children bullies at school? OK. But surely the armed forces do not consist and are not run by infantile brained people? Are they? God help us if they are! AND KILLING PEOPLE IS NOT A JOB ANYWAY.
Maybe Al Capone does not agree with me, but see if I care.
"If you want peace, prepare for war"? What a pathetic and devious statement, aimed at brainless audiences to instigate fear and extract their money for armaments. And they fall for it!
Some believe aggression is human nature. It probably was necessary for the Neanderthals. Aren't they extinct yet?
Maybe not.
And maybe this is the answer to your question.
Dear James,
as long as there are people who are incapable or afraid to communicate and love, peace is a pie in the sky for all the rest of us. I suggest the rest of us vote them out and try to educate them.
I only hope we will not need to tempt them with bananas....
Surely they have taken the next step. Haven't they....?

I love it!!!!...the problem is that some don't and they make it hard for everyone else to live in peace. so the peaceful can no longer be peaceful when there are those that wish to fight. now the peaceful must themselves fight.....
peace is a two way road and it requires participation from both sides. otherwise it simply becomes a slaughter.

It's a difference between the 'haves' and the ' have nots '. The rich and the poor. government, and religion both spawned from these problems. People want something that other people have. As seen in wars and disputes for land, money, and power. Even school children fight/bully for honor, homework, and various other items. Every conflict boils down to that.

"Si vis pacem, para bellum"
If you want peace, prepare for war.
Also, to qoute Karl von Clausewitz, "War is merely the continuation of policy by other means." and "War in general, and the commander in any specific instance, is entitled to require that the trend and design of policy shall not be inconsistant with the means.... the POLITICAL OBJECT is the goal, war is the means of reaching it, and means can never be considered in isolation from their purpose."

because peace is not a reality. it's a nice concept that is unobtainable in a world where people are able to think.

Because one side isn't always willing to listen. Therefore, there will never be peace. Just balance.

Amen brother. Religion has nothing to do with it, people's interpretation of religion does or their greed which causes them to use religion as a tool to recruit people who otherwise would not care to line their pockets.
