Sell it, donate it, do a "trash the dress" photo shoot. (You do not actually have to trash it, it is a photography trend where you wear the dress for a photo op.) You can wade in the creek, swim in the ocean, ride a horse, or mud wrestle, the events are only limited by your imagination. After the shoot, have the dress cleaned and you can still donate it, or make baby clothes or whatever.

Try to sell it.
If you can't sell it donate it to a cause like Brides For Breast Cancer and use the value as a tax-deduction.
Whoever emailed me and said I was heartless for not wanting to save the dress....she asked for most effcient. Saving the dress whether for your daughter or for christening outfits is not the most efficient. For one, alot of fabric is unused when they make the baby outfits. For another, you have to store the thing until you have the babies...which sadly may not ever happen.

My cousin turned her into baby blessing outfits for her children. So maybe you could use the fabric to make something similar.
You could do the whole box it up and save it for your daughters, but I don't know to many girls these days who wear their mother's wedding dresses.
You could donate it to a good cause such as: www.bridesagainstbreastcancer.com
Or check out this site: www.trashthedress.com

As pspoptart and Lydia have said, you can donate it to charity.

Edit: Anyone who thinks it is heartless to donate a dress to someone with breast cancer is the real heartless one, and an ignorant one at that.

I will be keeping my dress. I only paid 100 dollars for it and love it. You could always keep it, sell it or donate it to somenoe.

sell it...
donate it...
or if you are more sentimental and not in need of the money...you could make christening outfits out of it when you have children...or you could make pillows or baby blankets...

Have it heirloom-preserved. You can sell later or give to a daughter if you have one.
