I believe in physical reality, the power of this biological mind to understand, and the power of compassion and sacrifice to change the world in both little and monumental ways.

I also believe in truth, beauty, right and wrong, and ultimately I believe we can be awed and inspired by the forces that operate naturally in the universe without having to make them into a god or gods.

Frankly I pray if there is a god that he/she/it reveal itself to me - I think most atheists do, and not half-heartedly - but without having any revelation or any physical evidence that science can't explain we can only in good conscience say that other explanations are more likely.

Without god, there is still an AWFUL lot of wonderful things to believe in. I could probably fill up books - isn't the universe awesome enough without needing supernatural beings and miracles? :)

Cheers!

Atheists have no beliefs, strictly defined as something for which no evidence can be found. What we have are various degrees of convictions that some things are more or less true (or good if we're talking about morals - and don't you dare make the claim that religion has the slightest thing to do with good morals!).

These convictions reflect the current state of our knowledge and understanding, and are always subject to change given new evidence or perspectives. Yes, Virginia, morality *is* relative, and so are scientific facts: this evolution of ideas is how we are able to progress and make interesting discoveries like electricity, which leads to interesting and powerful tools like the Internet (which all you believers use without feeling the slightest sense of irony).

Religion, however, especially those with rigid 'holy' scriptures, can only become more and more out of step with society as time marches on and passes it by.

I believe that life will teach me most of what I need to know if I keep my heart open and sincerely look at the truth. I believe that I can love and be loved. I believe that love is nearly meaningless unless we SHOW it. I believe that "holy wars" are secretly about business, greed, power and control. I believe that leaders interpret the "word of God" to their own advantage. I believe that everything I'm made of was part of the earth before it was loaned to me and that when I die, everything I'm made of will go back into the earth where it will be parts of other living creatures.
There are more things I believe, but that's enough to get you started.

Why do we have to believe in something at all?
I believe that I am the only person with the power to control where I go with my life, how I should live, and what decisions I should make. Im not a sheep in a herd, I dont need a book to tell me how to live my life.

When I'm feeling positive, I believe in the power of truth -- the power of mathematics, including logic -- and I know without doubt reality exists within the objective (physical) realm.

When I'm feeling negative, "I believe people who believe in God will ultimately destroy civilization." ~~Brenden G (above)
