First your parents. Ask them where they were born, who their parents were, if they had any brothers and sisters, etc. Basically you want to talk to everybody in your family, but start with you first then work the branches from your mothers side of the family and your fathers side.
If there is an old family Bible which holds a storehouse of information because in the past people wrote information about birthdays, marriages, death in the Bible.

Start with the oldest living generaltion First.
Then work your way down...also get pictures and stories from the past..
also make copies of birth records..marriages..be sure to get birth dates..death dates..cemeteries where they are buried and pictures of the graves..army records and where and when they served and what units they were in. Any ship list if immigrated to the US and ships names....passenger list also.
I use Genealogy.com message boards..they are great and all you need to do is register.
Great site.......good luck and God bless
P.S.---also ask about closet stories(things that the family Never talks about)

Start with your parents, find out who your grandparents are, the go to your grandparents and find who your greatgrandparents are. Then you can go to your courthouse and find marriage records. You can also check ancestry.com

this is the order I'd do it: your parents, your aunts/uncles, your cousins, your grandparents. And then continue from there but at a higher level.
