Since meeting her new boyfriend, my sister in law has been into drugs (&legal trouble) for the last two years. (She lives far away and has limited/no mean to contact us). However, my mother-in-law keeps asking us when we are going to share our pregnancy news with her. I don't understand why my MIL keeps asking us when she cannot deal with her daughter and draws all kinds of boundaries with her. Is it wrong for us not wanting any contacts with them going forward? If not, how long should this isolation last? The lastest news that we received about the sister is she married the guy in jail. (this is quite sad b/c she has child from her last marriage, and now we are concern about how she and this new marriage affect this child)

she has a history of verbal abuse with her family and has threatened physically abuse when angry. so, she's not someone who is exactly sweet but has a drug addiction only.

MInd you, this is purely one man's opinion but refusing to tell her about your baby seems a bit punitive and petty. It's not as if you're asking her to babysit or "do" anything, so what harm can come from informing her of the pending birth of her niece/nephew? In truth, every family member has a problem of some sort; some are just more obvious than others, and oftentimes the connectivity to family can mean the difference between success and failure of an attempt to rehabilitate. You've made your decision, and I'm sure you have your reasons, and ultimately yours is the only opinion that counts. But just in case there's room for further discussion on this matter, maybe this position deserves rethinking. Good luck to you and congratulations.
