Bounced fees....If he went on a shopping spree writing checks thinking he'd have the money in the account it could be possible. However, that is a lot of checks or a huge spending spree. I would ask for proof. He is probably exaggerating.

ask your cousin to SHOW YOU the debit advice from his bank for the REAL bounce fee he was charged with for processing your check. Then you will know. There is NO WAY that he was charged TWENTY THOUSAND dollars.. Maybe $ 20 or so. Most banks charge between $ 20 and $ 30 for returning a stopped check.

That is possible depending on how much your check was that you stopped payment on.
