I am moving to NYC and will be renting (80% of Manhattanites rent so I wont feel like a loser)
I am trying to figure out how much $$$$ I need to rent a nice place and have enough cash for at least 2 years.
I am starting my own website for health and beauty and will be paying the bills with a lucrative part time corporate design job that pays 140k starting 2/08 in NYC.
I want to move to NYC by January.
I have 160k saved up. I plan to use some it towards rent/daily expenses.
Do I have enough saved up to cover 2 years in NYC ?
I plan to spend around 3-3,600 a month on rent.

if you keep your design job, you should have things covered.

Keep in mind that 80% of your meals are eaten out, and you WILL be out and about all the time. Everything costs money, no matter how careful you are.

Also, the job market is pretty volitile, so youre design job may or may not last too long.

Here's the skinny on upfront charges - First and last months rent, 15% of the yearly rental to the Rental Agent, $500 -1000 move in fee, Deposit for Phone, electric, Cable Etc.
In some markets, apartments go so quickly and the owners get picky, some pay 6 months in advance or more, just for the priveleges of getting into an apartment.

It took me 6 months to find a decent rental in a safe area that I wanted to be - and then waited 2 months for the tenant to vacate.

For that money.. you can probably get a decent studio/w sleep loft (480sq ft or so) or a small one bedroom. (650sq ft.)

Good luck and start looking.

Enough money to live two years in NYC. Your plan matches rent in Greenwich Village, Chelsea and other great and interesting neighbors. All you need is to make good decisions and you'll have an unforgettable experience.

Yes, you should definitely be okay...especially with the salary you will be earning. The amount you have saved is great too...many people move here with very little savings.

Good luck with your website!!!
