Seasons 52 for the fancier side (but not breaking the bank). Delicious healthy food and a huge by-the-glass wine menu.
Also, If you are in the attractions area, try going to Celebration (just west of Disney property on I4). The downtown area has several nice restaurants, all in different price ranges and all with outdoor seating by a lovely lake. We go to the Market St. Cafe all the time; entrees under $10. Columbia has great Spanish/Cuban food for $15-$25/entree. D'Antonios is generally yummy food (Italian) but be prepared for glacially slow service. The Tavern has a fun neighborhood atmosphere and entrees run $8-$20. There's also a tea shop that has light meals and Seito Sushi, which is EXCELLENT sushi (variable service!).
Plus there's a great ice cream place right next door to a nice little indie bookstore (the Reading Trout).
Just a nice place to spend an evening. And I promise we locals don't bite. ;-)

As you probably realize, what they call Orlando is really a very large area. The city of Orlando is really only 10%. If you are in the Disney area. the best are Vistoria and Alberts at the Disney Grand Floridian Hotel (Disney finally has put in place restrictions to unruly children): Norman's nr Seaworld at the Ritz Carleton Hotel - Closer to downtown Orlando Le Coque Au Van South Orange Avenue - excellent family owned restaurant; Downtown Orlando La Boheme at the Grand Bohemian Hotel: North of Orlando Enzo's in Longwood: Hollerbach's Willow Tree in Sanford; Viennas - wonderful quite new restaurant in Debary. You can research all and many more on Urban Spoon. Most withcopies of menus.

Go to orlandosentinel.com, to the entertainment tab on the left side, then restaurants. They have a site to look up different types of restaurants and also a critic with reviews of not only Orlando area restaurants but around the state. I always enjoyed his reviews. And he does not just review the tourist restaurants. Happy eating.

If you are in the area of North Semaron near Winter Park there is a great Greek place called the Greek Flame Taverna. I love the place myself and I got with my boyfriend every once and a while with my boyfriend who is Greek.
If you are done in the tourism area of International Drive there is the restaurant called the World Famous Dixie Crossroads Seafood Restaurant at the Festival Bay Mall.

Yes, try the new Pointe Orlando, located on International Drive.
Over 6 new restaurants opened, including the Capital Grille, Oceanire, Tommy Bahama, etc. Really good.
There is also Season's 52 and Moonfish and Roy's on Sandlake.
I agree with you - bag the chains and try something healthier.

Antonio's has the best Italian in town. There is one on Sand Lake, and one in Maitland. The one in Maitland, has a deli downstairs, and is less formal, but food is still incredible.
Tolla's on Pennsylvania Ave. in Winter Park
Seito Sushi - one in Winter Park Villiage, and one in Baldwin Park. Chicken terayaki is outstanding.
Coq au Vin - Orange and Michigan for French dining
Hot Olives on New England Ave. in Winter Park - the trout is delicious.
Seasons 52, there is one on Sand Lake, and one in Altamonte Springs.
Del Frisco's on Lee Rd. for Steaks - rated one of the top 10 steak places in the country.
I've heard good things about Hue - but haven't tried it yet.
Orlando is full of non chain great restaurants!
edit: Went to Numero Uno today for lunch...2499 S. Orange Ave, Orlando for Lunch....GREAT Cuban food!
