Most of it is definitely a buttercream-style frosting, although they may not be allowed to call it that on the label if it contains neither butter nor cream. It is that kind of frosting, though, in most cases. You can get other kinds, but if it isn't labeled it's most like buttercream.

Add some clear vanilla and clear butter extract - the better the extract, the better the flavor of your frosting. I know this sounds funny, but if you add some color to the frosting, for some reason, the more visually appealing you make it, the better it tastes. My niece won't eat white canned frosting, but when I made cupcakes for her, all I had was white - I added some yellow food coloring (her favorite color), and she gobbled it right up. I don't know if it's a color thing with her, or if she thought it tasted better, but it worked!

It tells you on the jar what kind it is. I wouldn't call it butter cream unless you got it out of the can saying butter cream. It's always got an artificial taste to it though. You're better off to combine powdered sugar and a bit of milk for frosting.

Hi !!!
It's closest to the Buttercream, but here are two easy recipes for you to use, which will taste much better than the Ready-Made frostings ...No chemical taste at all...HAPPY BAKING!!!
Kittencal's Really Easy Buttercream Frosting/Icing
* BELOW IS A COMMENT FROM THE BAKER THAT SUBMITTED THIS EASY RECIPE...
* This is a never-fail buttery smooth icing recipe that I developed years ago, it's the one I turn to for a quick easy icing that can be used with so many recipe, I always use this to top off Kittencal's Easy One-Bowl Vanilla Cupcakes I usually make up a double batch of this icing, separate into freezer containers and freeze until ready to use, this icing freezes very well. Also food colouring may be added to create a coloured icing. For Christmas create one recipe of red frosting and one recipe of green, then frost the baked vanilla cupcakes. Top with mini candy canes that are sticking upwards out of the frosting. I have done this using mini cupcakes and served them on a platter for the holidays! Butter-flavor shortening can be replaced for the butter if desired
2 cups
10 min 10 min prep
6 tablespoons butter, softened (no substitutions)
3 tablespoons whipping cream, unwhipped (35%)
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups confectioners' sugar
food coloring (optional)
In a bowl, beat together the butter, whipping cream and vanilla until smooth (about 3 minutes).
Add in confectioners sugar; beat very well until smooth, adding more if necessary to achieve desired consistency.
Note: In order for the icing to have a creamy texture, only whipping cream must be used.
----------AND, FOR CHOCOLATE...
Kittencal's Easy Chocolate Buttercream Frosting/Icing
*AGAIN COMMENT BELOW IS FROM THE BAKER...
* A wonderful very easy frosting I have used for years! It is made in very little time and with perfect results, 100% better than any canned stuff! Pick the amount of cocoa powder you desire for either a light, medium or dark frosting, and for an even more creamier frosting use unwhipped whipping cream in place of the half and half, double the recipe and freeze one batch for next time, this frosting freezes wonderful! NOTE for an ultra creamy fluffy milk chocolate frosting add in 1 to 1-1/2 cups thawed Cool Whip topping at the end of mixing the frosting and beat on low speed until blended.
2 cups
5 min 5 min prep
7 tablespoons butter, softened (you could use 1/2 cup butter if desired)
2 2/3 cups confectioners' sugar
1/3 cup half-and-half cream or milk (can use unwhipped whipping cream in place of half and half)
1 teaspoon vanilla
CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted (for light)
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted (for medium)
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted (for dark rich)
Cream the butter in a small bowl.
Blend in the cocoa powder (the amount desired for a light, medium or dark flavor), vanilla, confectioners sugar, alternately with the cream.
Beat with an electric mixer, until the desired texture is achieved.
Note: because of the additional cocoa more cream may have to be needed to reach desired consistency.
