Angels are in our mind.Angels are god's postmen or messengers.God requires no messenger to contact man.It is mainly christian. But Hindus,Buddhists etc believe in some sort of messengers. The present form and description is purely Christian contribution.

The "idea" of angels originated when man first saw one. When that happened I don't think we really know. All we do know is that they have a different appearance from us and that they have the ability to travel from place to place without the use of any mechanism. They can take on different shapes and speak through different means. Each one has a purpose and each of us have thousands of them assigned to us. Hmmm.

Angels exist in Judaism. It's unclear where they originated, but it's likely that a similar process occurred as did in Zoroastrianism, where minor gods were made into benevolent spirits.

The Origins of angels in Myth is in Sumer, but some think that they were inspired by Et's visiting early humans, and the human mistook them for gods, later called angels.

from the Catechism Of The Catholic Church:
CCC 328 - The existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls "angels" is a truth of faith. The witness of Scripture is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition.
CCC 329 - St. Augustine says: "'Angel' is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is ‘spirit'; if you seek the name of their office, it is ‘angel': from what they are, ‘spirit,' from what they do, ‘angel.'" With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God. Because they "always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven" they are the "mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word."
CCC 330 - As purely spiritual creatures angels have intelligence and will: they are personal and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures, as the splendor of their glory bears witness.

Way back when the Hebrews were polytheistic, the angels are hangovers from older gods.

In the beginning there was God, and before God there was no beginning. God was before the beginning, and will be in the end. There is no end, only a new beginning.
