my vision is pretty bad and ive been wearing glasses since i was 6. im 16 now and im getting soft contacts soon, but i heard that when your vision gets 2 a certain level of damage, soft contacts cant correct your vision anymore. is that true? please say it isnt!

also, if u have soft contacts, would you recommend them? are they really better than glasses? and do they make your eyes red? and how much do soft contacts cost excluding the cost of the solution?

It depends on how bad your vision is, i can't really say without specifics.. I mean, i'm -7.50 in one eye, and -6.50 in the other, which are both very high. Most soft contact lenses nowadays go up to -9.00D in 0.50 steps. E.g. from -7.50 to -8.00, then -8.50 and so on. I mean, you have to have VERY bad vision to be at -9.00! (this is assuming you're near sighted by the way), i believe they go up to +6.00D in the opposite direction.

It depends on what lenses you go for - i'd definately recommend soft lenses over RGPs, or hard lenses (which can feel like 'bricks' in the eyes, according to my optician). Certain lenses can make your eyes go red, indeed - you could be allergic to a certain component of the material they are made out of, you may get an eye infection, or they may not allow enough oxygen to your eyes. But recent advances in lenses mean that there are now ones that allow a lot of oxygen to your eyes (CibaVision night and day, Acuvue Oasys, Purevision and Acuvue Advance), so that need not be a problem, and eye infections are generally few and far between - you may not ever get one if you are careful with cleaning your lenses.

Again, the price depends on the type of lens.. Acuvue Advance aren't the cheapest, for instance, but there are other lenses that are far cheaper, depending on what type feel good in your eyes. I was unable to get on with the Acuvue Advance anyway. There are a LOT of lenses available for you to try that are fairly cheap..

Good luck!

yes that is true. when u get to a certain level of vision impairment u can no longer wear soft lenses. but dont worry. they make hard contact lenses that people can wear who have bad vision. but im sure ur vision isnt that bad. soft contact lenses go up to a pretty high prescription. i would def. recommend soft contact lenses. they are much better than glasses. they wont make ur eyes red. the price varies depending on what type of contact lenses you buy. there are a lot of brands of contacts varying in price. some people have a thing called an astigmatism which means your eye isnt a perfect circle. so if u have this u need a certain type of contact lense that usually cost more. but if ur eyes are normal then contact lenses usually cost a couple hundred. i wear acuvue oasys which is a really great brand of contact lenses that holds moisture in so ur eyes dont get dry. these lenses are around 250 but many times ur eye doctor will give you a rebate to get some money back. what u really need to do is go get ur eyes examined at a local eye doctor. see if u have any vision coverage from ur parents or ur employer. vision coverage usually covers some of the cost of the exam and contact lenses. ur eye doctor will make sure ur eyes are healthy enough to wear contact lenses and then he will tell you what kind of contact lenses u could wear. if u are money conscious ask him what contact lenses u could wear that would be more economical. once u are there they will let u try on a pair and see if u like them. then you can order either a year or half a year supply of contact lenses. sometimes the doctor will even give u a complentary box of solution to get u started. then u can just go to costco and buy one big bottle that will practically last u forever. i wear contact lenses and absolutely love not wearing glasses. so go see ur eye doctor and discuss ur options!

Standard disposable type contacts are available from +8D though to -15D and up to 3D of astigmatism.

Custom disposable are available from -20 to +20 and 6D of astigmatism.

Custom non disposable are available in any power.

There are a few rare corneal disorders that require rigid lenses not soft for correction.

Cost depends on what you need, where you get them and what country you live in.
