An Honorable Discharge means that you did the things that the branch of service required of you. You didn't get into trouble with the law or break many rules. Your service reflected honorably upon the uniform you wore and the service you represented. You would be entitled to certain benefits that military service affords you. These vary from state to state and can include educational benefits, care at a V.A. hospital or clinic for injuries or disabilities that were incured during your time in service and preferrential points when hiring for certain government associated employment after you leave the service.
A Dishonorable discharge means that you were in trouble, did things not becoming a service person or leading to discredit upon the service you represented. Usual this results in forfiture of the above benifits and may make it difficult to secure employment with anyone who cares to check.
