I am currently attending college and am very interested in losing weight. My studies keep me extremely busy, so I have very little time to work out (less than an hour a week). I basically just need to watch what I eat. My question is, what can I safely eat (maybe even in somewhat large amounts?) in a cafeteria to help lose weight. We have many different foods including the usual burgers, pizza and salad bar, but we also have things like fruit, pasta, potatoes, stir fry, omelets, etc. What can I safely eat? I know the obvious answer is salad and fruit, but I need other things to satisfy me. Help!

Eating healthy in a college cafeteria can be difficult. Where I went to school, if you had dietary restrictions then they would have prepared a special meal for you. It was just a matter of calling up food services and filling out some forms.

Veggies are always a good bet. Even though in a cafeteria they probably have a lot of butter in them. Nobody can mess with fruit. That is always low calorie. There's nothing wrong with pasta as long as you eat it in moderation. Stay away from cream or Alfredo sauces though. They're fat traps. Anything that is labeled as fried, creamed (or cream sauce), and scalloped you should skip.

Fish is usually okay, depending on how it is prepared. Lean meats and chicken can also be included in a low calorie diet. Stay away from fries and pizza. Mostly anything you wouldn't eat outside of school you don't want to eat in the cafeteria. Good luck.

Make sure that with each meal yo have a serving of protein - such as eggs for breakfast, cottage cheese with lunch, and a serving of lean meat at supper. Then have the rest of you choices be low in refined carbs, and low in fats. That is were veggies come in very good. If you are having carbs - try to have whole grain items rather than those made with white flour.
And be thankful for the long walks between classes - that is a primary source of exercise for many college students.

With your busy schedule, I bet you will lose weight without realizing so.
But you could try to avoid pasta and breads and focus on proteins and fruits and veggies.

Stay away from anything soaked with grease (ie pizza), and keep to the lean meats (ie chicken breast). Stay away from all fried foods and don't be fooled by the omelet. Stay away from the sugary stuff (ie cookies, cakes), and don't go for any of the mayo based salads (ie pasta salad, potato salad, seafood salad).
