My family is bugging me because I never tuck my shirt in. I just don't find it comfortable and also don't do it at work.

Is this really necessary?

It depends on what you do for a living.

Some people see a person with his shirt tucked in professional. Do you want to appear professional, or respectable?

If you are working at a shop selling surf boards, then it is really NOT necessary to tuck your shirt. That would be dorky.

Depends on what kind of job you do? If you are in an office or a supervisor etc. Yeah I would say yes.
It's not that you have to tuck in your shirt, it just makes you look more respectable and showing that you have a certain class about yourself.
I can see where your parents are coming from. I don't think that they understand our generation because that's how they were brought up.
I would just listen and show some respect to them but at the same time when you hit the door and out you go, your shirt can come out.
Just make sure it's ok with your employer and watch how other ppl around you dress that should give you a hint. Good Luck and Have Fun.

Sounds like your field isn't super stuffy, so it's not a requirement to tuck.

However, you really should look at the type of shirt it is-- some should be tucked while at work, and some NEVER should be tucked. Here's what I think: If the hem of the shirt is straight (like a Tommy Bahama shirt), you're not supposed to tuck it. If it is a button down dress shirt (longer in the front and back) it would look better tucked. Exception to this rule is if you are wearing it unbuttoned with a t-shirt underneath. T-shirts shouldn't be tucked unless you want to look like a dork.

Hope this helps! Otherwise, just look around at who else works there- is everybody else tucking? Maybe you should too. If not, don't sweat it.

If you wear a belt, jacket or tie, the shirt should be tucked in.

If you are finding your shirt being tucked is uncomfortable, you are likely either tucking incorrectly or wearing the wrong sized shirt. Do not tuck into your undies. While you pants are down, smooth your shirt down and put your pants over the top..not pull your pants up making your shirt bunch and ride up. A bunchy shirt is very uncomfortable and unsightly.

If you are tucking properly and are still uncomfortable, it sounds as if your chest and shoulder width are too small, try a slightly larger shirt that will give you a bit more room under your arms and will allow you to twist and put your hands above your head without pulling or feeling constrained.

best wishes

Some businesses have a "dress code" and tucking in your shirt might be required. I have to wear a hairnet... I don't LIKE it, but it's required.

If you do not have such rules, just follow the idea of looking "neat" and presentable... or following the "dress of the day"... that is... if you're wearing jeans and work clothes, tucking in is not necessary. But if you're wearing slacks, shirt, sweater, if it looks neater to tuck, then tuck. If it looks "messy" to be untucked, then tuck. If it's part of the "fashion/style" to be untucked (which in some cases it is), then UNtuck.

WHEW!!! Almost sounds like "anything goes"!!! In your case, if your family is bugging you about it, maybe it's the case that you look messy with the "tails out" and they just want to see you looking your best!

Have a polite day!

You didn't mention what line of work you're in. If you're digging a ditch, then no. If you're an office manager, then yes.

The best way to find out is to ask your boss.

I sure as hell don't on casual Friday. I do during Monday through Friday...only because I have to.
