While it is a good idea to be looking for other things to do during the day, please don't underestimate the importance of play at this age. Children learn so many skills through play, including: problem-solving skills, sharing, creative thinking, and so on. If you are worried that their play is not productive, take a closer look at the toys. Do you have any "educational" toys that can teach them skills without sitting down to do "work"?

Color time, Finger painting. Find a free early childhood sight and print up there worksheets. Book time. And imaginative play. Less cartoons and more play is good. My daughter is four and paints and colors and is starting to write her abc and 123. She is also learning to recognize sight words that they need to pass kindergarten. She recognizes her name and other words. Just remember they don't have to be perfect when they first start. Also go over shapes and colors. Make holiday theme coloring pages or events they are going through. Stuff like that. That also helps them deal with things that are bothering them. We also have goofy or silly time. And quiet time through out the day. My daughter tested out of preshool. Other wise she is too smart for it. But if you can get them into head start or something similar would be good. It teaches them how to interact with other people then just family. I hope this helps.

start getting them ready to go to school by teaching them how to write their names. I started by showing them how to do the first letter and when they get that down add the next letter.

Have them recognize the letters of the alphabet by using flash cards.

Draw shapes on paper and see if they know what they are, then have them draw them.

Movie time is also good so you can get work done that you need too.

Have music time and teach them silly songs.

Teach them to count to 20
how to use scissors and glue the right way.
Memorize their phone number
Start writing the ABC'S

Do arts and crafts with them. Decorate old shoe boxes. take them out side to play. Read books with them.
