He was a typical man, he did not ask directions. He rather wander 40 years in the desert. But God provided for Him. His sandals did not wear out and they had plenty to eat ( manna from God ) : )

Do you mean the 40 years wandering in the desert?
Simple really. He didn't want most of the Israelites around who had been alive in Egypt. Took 40 years for the last of the undesirables to drop off, and all he was left with were the ones who hadn't been contaminated by living in Egypt.
YHVH was very hardcore about purity in the ancient Israelites, and could go to downright nasty extremes to try and make sure the Israelites were free from contamination of any kind, up to and including complete genocide.

As an answer, many jewish commentators have reversed the question: "Why did Moses make God wait 40 years?"
Then there's the standard answer to a 'why' question: "Why not?"

It takes many years to prepare some of us for His use. I think God was just working out some personal problems in His life, to get him ready to lead the people out of Egypt. He also spent the 40 years taking care of sheep, are we not like sheep, stubborn and wanting to go our own way and vulnerable to the enemy?

To God, time is irrelevant. One day to Jehovah is like a thousand years and a thousand years is as one day! 2Peter 3:8
