I eat raw cookie dough all the time and my wife flips out. I tell her that if raw cookie dough was bad, they wouldn't make "chocolate chip cookie dough" ice cream. Who is right?

You are going to get answers on both sides of the issue and I really don't know which side is right.

However, there is a risk of salmonella in eating raw cookie dough containing uncooked or unpasteurized eggs.

I believe the ice cream makers get around this problem by using cookie dough made with pasteurized eggs.

If the cookie dough wrapper specifies pasteurized eggs, all is copacetic, salmonella-wise. If it does not say pasteurized eggs, you really ought to stop, or at least greatly reduce the amount of cookie dough you eat.

Even if your cookie dough is made with pasteurized eggs, you probably ought to limit the amount you eat. Besides the salmonella danger, you are ingesting lots of useless calories, and that is not good for your waistline, blood pressure, or cholesterol level.

If you eat a little bit, it won't hurt you. But the raw eggs can make you really sick. Cookie dough ice cream has cookie dough in small enough portions so that it won't make you sick.
Your best bet is, if you do eat cookie dough, only eat a small amount, such as a little spoonful.

Before proper storage times, it was possible to develop internal worms from the flour in cookie dough. Also, raw eggs are sometimes full of bacteria that may make you sick. That is why she is concerned. Plus, if you eat all the cookie dough, there will be fewer baked cookies.
