Yes illegal. If caught you are unlikely to find yourself in the 'slammer' but you may end up with a hefty fine. Don't do it.

If the trial software is still operating within it's legal time frame as specified by the software and it accepts the patch or upgrade, then it's fine to install them to keep the trial version up to date.

However, not all trial software will accept patches or updates.

I'm not sure if you're also referring to cracks or serial generators that are illegal to use on copyrighted materials if it circumvents the legal use of that software.

It is theft of intellectual property.
Depending on the cost of the software
involved, it might be a misdemeanor,
or a felony.
