The other answer is right as you are now a GB resident just get a form from the post office, and fill it in, send a photo and your money and that's it you will get a provisional licence back.
Look at the resources page on www.steerclear.org.uk there is a free CD on there (£1.50 p & p) it tells you all about the legal reguirements when driving in this country, what you should do as a provisional licence holder, how you take tour test etc..

You need to apply to the DVLA for a UK provisional licence.
Just check out

www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers.aspx

The rules are simple.
On a provisional licence, you must -

Display red L plates on the front and rear of your car. They must be clearly visible but not in the windows or over the reg plates.
You need a person, over 21 years old, who has held a full uk licence for the category of vehicle you are driving for at least 3 years in the front passenger seat at all times while you are driving. You need your own insurance for the car and it must be taxed and MOT'd.
You cannot drive on motorways but dual carriageways are ok. Motorways have blue signs, DC's have green signs.

If you get a proper driving instructor, which I reccomend you do, all of the above will be covered for you and you just pay by the hour.
The AA driving school is the one I went with and they are a national company. I passed in 4 months with them.

You cant drive on your own until you have passed your test but once you have passed your test there is no restrictions on what you do or where you drive.
However for the first 2 years if you accumulate 6 points on your licence then you have to take your test again. After these two years it goes upto 12 points.

Depends on what part of Australia you have your licence from - some provisional licence in Australia are exchangable for a full UK licence - the best thing is to call DVLA on 0870 240 0009 with your Australian Licence in front of you and they will be able to tell you.

There are plenty of illegals with drivers license in my state. There was a big thing on the news about it a few years ago. The ones that gave them the licenses have been fired. I don't think they should have a drivers license unless they are legal. That is what we use at times as I.D. I work with the public and some of them are using a state ID as a drivers license. I told one man that did not give him the right to drive here it was just an ID. After I said that....he could no longer understand or speak English...go figure...sick of it all....

For the first year you are OK so ask DELA I think you will need a UK provisional and I would advise you to take your driving test ASAP if you are going to be here for over twelve months

You need to be accompanied by a driver who is over 21 and held a full licence for at least 3 years. www.dvla.gov.uk that site will redirect you to another government info site but it is quite easy to navigate round.
And it has to be a full GB licence not that the web site tells you that.
