Every american who isn't a Native American is an immigrant or a descendant of one... as far as learning the language, i believe that every effort should be made to learn the language of the country one lives in.

I'm sure learning a new language is not easy. If you come to the United States, you need to learn English. Otherwise, you will never really become an American. Use English only. Soon you will be translating from Russian into English instead of English into Russian.

My mom is from England, and came over here legally when my dad orders from the Air Force to be stationed in South Dakota. For her only different words were probably hard and the accent which isn't a bad thing I guess. For other people who can't speak English they should learn as much as they should and don't give up. English is a hard language to learn in most cases.

I think LEGAL IMMIGRANTS are GREAT!!!! I have no problem with someone wanting to better their life by comming to this country.

But what I think they should remmeber is that they LEFT their other country for a better life here, and then NOT try to make us follow their guidlines of their old country.

If you are muslum and you come to a christian nation, dont try to make them take GOD off their money and out of their Pledge. You are in a Christian nation now, but you still have your freedom to worship as you like.

If you are Mexican and come to this country LEGALLY GREAT!!! But do make US learn YOUR language so that youcan live HERE! You came her seeking a better life, learn to speak our language.

This country was founded by immigration. On an ENGLISH speaking and CHRISTIAN based belief. If you decide to be a guest here and then a citizen, respect EVERYONE RIGHTS and don't try to make this country like the one you left, after all, there was a reason you left it right?

Her experience is not all that unusual.

However we used to see the younger members of the family learning English until after 2-3 generations it was all that was spoken.

In fact it would be a big deal for grandparents to show off to their peers how well the grandkids could speak English.

A lot of that has changed now.

Yes it's hard for an older person to learn a new language. But you don't hear your grandmother saying Just cause I don't speak English I want to change the USA's offical to Russian or make it your second language. That's what some want.

Perfect English is not necessary (as you can see by the way English speaking people butcher it) but enough to be able to function in America. Your grandmother needs someone to take care of her. I understand that 70's is harder to learn and she will likely never learn, but she needs to know how to tell a clerk what she is looking for, or the butcher what she wants.
Only mean spirited people 'hate' someone in this case.

I don't like the term legal immigrants once you receive citizenship your American that is the way it's meant to be just the fact that we have to put the word legal or illegal in front is a travesty in its own right.

Should they have to learn English well no I don't think they should have to learn it just at least try to put a good effort into it not just for others but for themselves. It makes life easier for every one involved.

Legal Immigrants are the backbone of this country. A legal immigrant wants to leave behind their oppressive country and become an American.
Illegal immigrants are the scum of the earth. An illegal immigrant wants to extend the borders of their oppressive country into America.
See the difference? It is THAT simple!

America is built on legal immigrants. You will always have your insensitive people who don't respect other people and are intolerant of cultural differences. Anyway, people should respect their elders. Anyone being mean to a 70 year old grandmother is just a miserable person.
