Can anyone explain to me how to disable those extra characters when I'm typing. When I hit the space bar it makes a dot, and when I hit the enter key it makes those little paragraph symbols.

In the tool bar there is an icon like a backwards P but with the circle filled in. If you hover the cursor over it, it with come up as "show/hide"

Click this and the marks will disappear.

I presume you're using Office 2003 or older (if you're using 2007 this does not apply)

So... open Word and turn your eye to the left lower side of the screen, just above the Start Menu Button.

You should see 4 little page-like icon. Click on them to change the view. You will want to click on the 3rd one to return to normal mode. The first one clicked makes all the funny characters to appear again.

Hope this helped ;)
