I recently got married and my husband has not filed taxes since 2003, he has gotten a deadline to file before they start garnishing his wages...so now I am here to fix it. I can't seem to find a website with the software for state and federal that doesn't charge an arm and a leg!! I am sure I can do it myself online, or should I pay a professional?? Then, I have to search around somewhere for a tax person and wonder if they are going to rip me off!! I have always done my own taxes and never paid anyone, but with his I am worried because they are old, and he is already flagged...ADVICE PLEASE!!!!! Thank you!!

You can't file online for 2003, 2004, 2005 now. You can only file on-line for 2006 taxes still.

Depending on how simple or how complex your husband's tax situation is (W-2 versus self-employed for example), you could go on-line to www.irs.gov and download the forms that you need, or you could go to a chain tax prep firm (H&R Block, Jackson-Hewitt), or find a local CPA/Tax Prep firm in your area.

If you've done your own taxes in the past, and if his aren't any more complicated than yours were, then download the forms at irs.gov - be sure to go to prior years to get the right forms and instructions - fill them out and mail them in. The fact that they're old, and he's under scrutiny, shouldn't matter as long as his situation is simple. If he owns a business, for example, I'd find a CPA and your husband should pay the CPA fees.

Good luck.

To my knowledge there are no on line "free" tax programs that go back to 2004. You can go to IRS.gov and get the forms and do them by hand if they are not very difficult. A tax professional will charge you something near $150 but they would be done.

File an amended IL return showing no income in that state. Then file WI (if you didn't) to show that the income was taxed there. If WI sends you a penalty notice ask for abatement because your tax preparer screwed up.

try Taxact online, the standard version is free & can be done online, but l don't know if they go back to 2003.
Note: printing out the return requires you to have Adobe on
your computer, but they don't tell you that until you are ready to print.
