I just graduated college in 3 yrs. and while I was completing my two classes during the summer, my 1st job hired me on a temporary basis (which was rare to find since most firms were looking for full time at the time). After I was done with my classes, my job took me on board on a full time basis. It was for a small ad/marketing comp. and I loved it there, flexible hours, work environment was chill, co-workers were young (so it was easy to relate), and pay was ok. However, before I had even graduated I had applied to work for Social Security Administration. They called me on a Thursday to start on Tuesday and since I couldn't make up my mind I waited until Monday to tell the ad comp.I quit. I only have a wk with SSA and I already don't like it, the workers are older, won't get a raise until my 2 YR probationary period is over and it doesn't even relate to what I studied in college ( I was a business major). Is it too early to try to get my old job back? Or should I wait it out at SSA?

Your always going to have some type of connection to your first job, much like your first love kinda of thing, I would try to think of long term, government jobs are usually pretty secure and have good benefits and 20yr retirement plan, you could maybe wait it out and apply for some other job in the state or government field, the same thing happened to me once, I left my first job for a slightly better job but wasn't as happy there, but i stuck with it and worked a couple days a week at my first job to......did both for a while....really thought about quiting my new job to go back, but i didn't,,,,2 years later job number one went out of business, so still had job two... think long term, but also keep happiness in mind as well, praying never hurts either, perhaps you fell guilty for leaving job one on such short notice.....maybe you can find a way to still play a role in job one......

Why did you take a job that did Not relate to your studies ?
Now you know to ASK questions Before you accept a job .
1 ) apply for job
2) ask lots of questions during the interviews
3) decide on job based on the whole picture .

The ad job won't last long , but you are young and will probably go through several jobs .
If you seriously think the ad job will last another 9 months to a year , go for it .

normally I'd say if the SS was paying more then to stay with it a while and then see if you can move into another government type job. However, you might want to check with your old company's boss first to see if you can go back with them. They are two totally different kinds of jobs. Whatever field you majored in in college is what you should be working in.
