No. I think that much Mormon doctrine is an offense and a contradiction to the Word of God from the Scriptures, but Mormons are not crazy. In fact, Mormons are some of the finest people I know. As a group, they live out their faith by putting charity in practice much better than the Christian community at large. There are things we mainstream Christians could learn from Mormons to help us better practice our faith. Perhaps the perception about the couple you know isn't because they are Mormon, but because they are just weird people. There are weird people in every religion. Or, maybe you live in a place that's just predjudiced against Mormons.

yes it is such a common misconception. Mormans are sort of a new religon so of course the other branches of Christianity are going to look down on them and accuse them of having crazy ideas. But their beliefs about Joesph Smith are could be considered just as crazy as Jesus walking on water. I am not a Morman, I read the Book of Morman and although I disagree with it I think Mormans are quite swell. Their religon isn't so bad.

A common misconception is to confuse weird beliefs with weird behavior.

Weird like how? I know we seem to have a stranger sense of humor compared to others, maybe it's just me, but we aren't a strage as some people think.

I don't think that. I think that they believe in their religion for the same reason anyone believes in their religion,- because these beliefs are comforting to them. For the record I think all theistic religions are crazy, especially all sects of Christianity. Someone's particular denomination is really an unimportant detail to me, I think all religious doctrine is equally crazy.

Crazy, no. Misled, Yes!
Mormon Doctrine:
The Bible has been corrupted by errors of translation and transmission, as well as by deliberate action.
The true Church was lost and needed restoring.
Church system is based upon a priesthood succession passed on from man to man.
Jesus Christ and the Heavenly Father appeared in secret to Joseph Smith in the woods.
God, our Heavenly Father, is an exalted man of flesh and bone.
Our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ the Son are two distinct physical beings.
The Holy Ghost is a third, distinct, spirit being; different also in function and identity from the Holy Spirit.
Mankind existed in a premortal life with Heavenly Father, being first a spiritual, then a natural being.
All men are literally sons of God, born to him in the pre-existence.
All men will have immortality and resurrection through Christ's deathóbut thatís all His death accomplished.
Jesus is the literal son of God, conceived as we were, but of an immortal Father.
Jesus, a created being born to God, created the world and universe, after the pre-mortal life of man began.
Jesus is mankind's elder brother, firstborn spirit child of our Heavenly Father, and by inference, spirit-brother to Lucifer and his demons.
"As man is, God once was..."
"...as God is, man can become." (Well-known quote by Lorenzo Snow, former Mormon prophet, found in many Mormon writings)
One's personal salvation and exaltation is conditioned upon his works and obedience to the teachings of the Mormon church, with the highest exaltation going to those who are most faithful.
Few will be cast into the lake of fire with the Devil and his angels, since nearly all men will gain some lesser or greater degree of heavenly kingdom, based on their good works.
Just because one claims to be a Christian does not make it True.
