Tell your teacher if she wants you to know what it is to be a Real American. Look at all the past Wars we were in.
And the cost of Freedom for all. Tell her to go to Washington,D.C. Walk down to the Veitnan Memorial. Or Arlington Cemetry. That is what a Real American is.
You don't need to make a Flag. We have the best Flag of all.

Just brain-storming here to help you out since it seems most of the answers you've gotten were more for political reasons and unhelpful:
A rebellious attitude towards tyranical rule (perhaps an upside-down crown or a soldier standing on top of a crown?)?
Something to represent diversity in it's people's and religions?
Something to represent that the U.S. is a Republic (like the individual stars do in the real flag)?
Maybe something to represent the constitution - one thing that might be good to use is the fact that the U.S. has the only military in the world sworn to defend a piece of paper (the constitution) that contains ideals above following a king or leader.
Amazing that people can't even put aside politics to help someone with homework. There is no right or wrong answer here.

For me, being an American is something I feel, like an ingrained part of my soul, that just won't let go. It's as much a part of me, as my finger's and my toes. Of course we all know the words used when speaking about America. Freedom, Liberty, God, Country, Honor...but they'll never describe what is inside, of an American, nor the absolute love that our Soldiers, past and present have bore upon the people of America. There are some things words cannot describe, and being an American, for me, is one of them.
Most other countries have fought for their government's for other purposes, rather than for the freedom of their own people.
America has never done that. Our people are ALWAYS fighting for freedom, not just for ourselves, but for other countries, as well. Just ask any American Soldier.
Be creative, and put what you feel in your heart on your flag. That is what America is all about, our hearts, and LOVE of country.

For an American to truly answer this question in this day and time , one must not be allowed to be an American for a period of time ! Having to spend time in an UNAmerican country for say a year , and trust me , you will have many more heartfelt answers here about what it means to them to be an American !!

i dont like the idea of the soldier in the middle because that gives the idea that we are some kind of military state. of course, we are a military state but i dont think that is the kind of image we want to present.
being an american means
-a chance for a good education
-a media that controls your brain
-a belief (though not always reality) of/in freedom
-capatilism/making money/ business
just put a tv in the middle with dollar bills on the screen and then offset in the background show a report card with D's and F's

You only need to put on 13 red and white stripes and a field of blue with 50 stars.

you need the original flag, then add the colour black to represent the black community, then add a dash of green with an expanding sign to represent the gradual take over of america by the mexicans.
