Pyrethrins or permethrins are the active ingredient in flea shampoo and NIX and RID. Use only the one approved for animals. If there are fleas, it's likely he's allergic to them. Use Advantage (read the directions very well, it's easy to mess up) and if that helps, that's your problem. When the skin is that bad, they often need steroids to get some relief. Only a vet can do that. You may want to call several vets and explain your situation. Where I live there are places to go where donations cover your cost. Your dog could also have mange, pemphigus, allergic dermatitis, or other conditions that can only be treated by a vet and will only get worse if left untreated. Part of owning an animal is being able to provide for them this way.

Fleas will make any dog scratch, but some seem to be more affected than others.

Can you see fleas on your dog? If so, getting rid of them will probably get rid of the problem. You can use a safe flea shampoo or your vet can give you a once-a-month flea product (like advantage) that kills fleas and keeps your pet from getting more.

If you can't see fleas, then she might have a skin allergy which could be from a lot of different things such as foods, environment, etc. Or, it could even be from stress.

Sometimes an oatmeal bath will help relieve the itching. You can buy them at the pet store or I have even used real ground up oatmeal, but it doesn't mix as well.

It's not always easy to figure out what's causing the problem, but you're vet should be able to help.

Good luck. I know how hard it is to know your dog is miserable and not know what to do about it.

I would be concerned about mange of a severe flea allergy.
Your dog sounds utterly uncomfortable and needs good care at this time.
Got to the vet for a skin scraping or a possible skin biopsy to cheack for mites. Mites tend to show themselves around the eyes and you will notice hair loss around them.. Some times they cause eruptive lesions on the body.
Make sure to get Advantage or Revolution for flea control. You need to put an end to fleas on your pet. They can bite thousands of times. Some dogs have a significant inflammatory reaction to flea bites.
Vets will often treat with a steroid or an NSAID like Rimadyl for the incredible discomfort..
Imagine being so itchy you make yourself bleed.
Get her to the vet for the medical attention she needs.

Without a doubt fleas are rampant and do cause a host of problems, however it is wise to check with a reputable vet for a positive diagnosis.

It could be a flea allergy, or it could be a 'hot spot' or some other skin condition. I'd check with your vet for for a diagnosis and the proper treatment.

Could be some kind of skin infection. Best to put neosporian (sp) and wrap it with some type of gauze. Change the dressing on it every morning and night and see what happens after a couple of days. If that doesn't work, you probably should take your dog to the vet.

Good Luck hope your fur baby get's better.
